Post CCT Fellow (eqv to ST8+) in Orthopaedic Extremity Trauma
Barts Health NHS Trust is one of the largest NHS trusts in the UK and offers a comprehensive service covering the full range of Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery. The Trust has a long and well-established reputation for innovation, high-volume trauma care and excellence in orthopaedic training.
This fellowship is a 12-month fixed term post, primarily based at The Royal London Hospital, one of the busiest Major Trauma Centres in Europe, with opportunities to gain experience across the wider Barts Health network, including Whipps Cross Hospital and St Bartholomew’s Hospital where appropriate.
The fellowship offers comprehensive exposure to complex orthopaedic extremity trauma, including upper and lower limb trauma, peri-articular fractures, polytrauma management and reconstruction. Fellows will gain experience in both acute trauma management and definitive surgical fixation, with increasing autonomy tailored to their stage of training.

Main duties of the job
This post provides a structured balance of supervised and independent clinical practice, supporting the transition to consultant-level responsibility within trauma and orthopaedics.
The fellow will be an integral member of the trauma team, actively involved in:
- Daily trauma meetings and decision-making
- Operating theatre lists, including complex trauma cases
- Fracture clinics and specialist trauma follow-up clinics
- Ward rounds and multidisciplinary team worki

Job responsibilities
The successful applicant will work closely with all consultants in the department. Mr Peter Bates and Ms Homa Arshad will act as educational supervisors, with the wider consultant body providing mentorship and support throughout the fellowship. The post is designed to develop advanced operative skills, clinical judgement and leadership in trauma care.
Barts Health fellowships have an excellent track record of supporting fellows into substantive consultant posts both within the UK and internationally.
The Trust has a strong academic profile, and fellows are encouraged to engage in research activity, clinical trials and service development projects. Completion of at least one audit or quality improvement project and contribution towards peer-reviewed publication is expected during the fellowship.
Person Specification
Qualifications and knowledge
- MBBS or equivalent
- FullGMCregistrationwitha license to practice
- MRCS or equivalent
- CCT (or equivalent) in trauma and orthopaedics
- BScor equivalent
Experience
- Detailed knowledge of lower limb arthroplasty.
- Arthroplasty fellowship
Skills
- Needs to be competent with routine orthopaedic trauma. Must be confident and independent with lower limb arthroplasty.
- Experience at Level-1 trauma centre

Specific requirements
- On-call 1:20 Weekday Consultant on-call from home after 8pm
- Expected to work flexibly and on shifts and so to be highly responsive.
- Sufficient to perform the duties of the post with any aids and adaptations
