Job Description

Lead design and delivery of water infrastructure projects for the UK’s major water authorities as a Design Manager within AtkinsRéalis’s Design & Advanced Technology (D&AT) Practice. This role involves coordinating multidisciplinary engineering teams, managing technical deliverables, and ensuring high‑quality standards across hydraulics, wastewater, clean water, water reuse, and pipelines.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate or manage a team of engineers to deliver technical design work on multidisciplinary projects, following national and project‑specific design codes and standards.
  • Drive and oversee the production and review of technical deliverables such as design reports, drawings, calculations and scopes of work, ensuring consistency and quality.
  • Provide technical input into design deliverables for complex projects, working with project management to manage time, budgets and milestones.
  • Collaborate with clients, operational teams and other AtkinsRéalis disciplines to integrate design solutions.
  • Mentor less experienced colleagues and grow engineering capabilities within the local team.
  • Work independently with minimal guidance, exercising judgement to solve difficult problems and support junior team members.
  • Support bid proposals with technical expertise.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams in the UK and overseas to deliver integrated design solutions.
  • Adhere to quality assurance standards in design, including review of own work and that of others.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Civil Engineer.
  • Proven experience managing an engineering design delivery team within a multidisciplinary environment, collaborating with contractors and delivering across the full project lifecycle.
  • Strong knowledge of risk assessment, quality control, change management, commercial awareness and design management in water infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with design codes and standards, including CDM Regulations, Eurocodes, water utility standards and NEC.
  • Proficiency in analytical software and tools such as AutoCAD, CDEs, MS Office, and Power BI.
  • Experience in the water market is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to convey technical concepts clearly within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proactive, highly motivated, collaborative mindset with a strong focus on teamwork and shared success.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance.
