The British Forces Post Office (BFPO) is offering an exciting opportunity for Defence Couriers (DCs) to join our team, based at our Headquarters in Northolt. This role involves purpose, responsibility, and travel, supporting the UK Armed Forces both in the UK and across the globe.

BFPO provides postal and courier services to personnel in over 650 locations worldwide. The role supports delivery of letters and parcels to maintain morale and enable communication for service personnel and their networks.

As a Defence Courier, you will undertake a dynamic role with opportunities for UK and international travel. You will escort and securely deliver Protectively Marked Material (PMM) as part of a two-person team, sharing driving responsibilities and operating a large van to deliver items safely to various locations.

We are looking for individuals who are organised, dependable, and self-motivated, with strong communication, collaboration, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. The role offers autonomy and opportunities to contribute to continuous improvement within BFPO operations.

Responsibilities

  • Safeguard and escort Protectively Marked Material (PMM) across the UK and internationally, ensuring secure transport and compliance with diplomatic protocols under the Vienna Convention.
  • Maintain security and integrity of PMM, preventing tampering and unauthorised inspection, and ensuring safe delivery without compromise.
  • Operate and maintain specialist equipment, applying technical expertise to support secure and efficient movement of sensitive materials.
  • Apply knowledge of MOD policies, international regulations, and host nation requirements to ensure compliance with Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) guidance for worldwide delivery operations.
  • Complete advanced safety and security training and pre-deployment requirements to meet FCDO standards and operate in diverse environments.

Person specification

Essential criteria:

  • Full UK manual driving licence (Category B minimum; Category C1 or above desirable) and a maximum of 6 penalty points.
  • Effective communication skills for engagement with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Basic IT literacy with ability to use standard workplace systems, including MS Office.
  • Ability to travel extensively at short notice, often independently, within the UK and internationally.

Additional assessment at interview will cover technical competences and behaviours including customer service and network management.

Offered benefits

  • 25 days’ annual leave + 1 day per year up to 30 days, 8 bank holidays, and a day off for the King’s birthday
  • Market-leading employer pension contribution of 28.97%
  • Annual performance-based bonus and recognition awards
  • Access to specialist training and funded qualifications
  • Support for progression
  • Discounts across a wide range of services
  • Enhanced parental leave schemes
