Job Overview
The Netherton Hub is a major new energy infrastructure development near Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, part of SSEN Transmission’s Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment programme. The role provides hands‑on experience in a UKAS‑accredited laboratory, supporting high‑profile projects that strengthen Scotland’s renewable‑powered future.
Responsibilities
- Sampling materials for approval and compliance testing to UKAS standards.
- Sample preparation, including quartering, riffling and crushing.
- In‑situ testing: dynamic cone penetrometer, plate load, sand replacement, lightweight deflectometer, nuclear density testing and pavement quality testing.
- Laboratory testing: moisture contents, moisture condition values, particle size distribution (wet and dry), density, compressive strength of concrete, soil classifications.
- Concrete slump tests and cylinder cube testing for compliance.
- Laboratory environmental, balance checks and equipment calibration.
- Maintain laboratory cleanliness and equipment hygiene.
- Understand and apply relevant standards, test methods, and specifications.
- Support safety and health practices; maintain safe methods of work on site and in the laboratory.
- Inspection and testing on site and in the laboratory as required by contract, identifying and reporting risks and opportunities.
- Comply with the site quality system for the materials testing laboratory.
- Record and report defects via the contract non‑conformance procedure.
- Deliver results by contractual deadlines.
- Maintain equipment calibrations and notify lab manager of any defects.
- Identify, record, and report best practice to the project and off‑site teams.
- Assist in audits of the Laboratory Quality System and ensure findings are closed out.
Qualifications
- Previous experience in a UKAS‑accredited laboratory with construction materials (soils and concrete).
- Knowledge of health and safety risk assessments and method statements.
- Ability to operate within an agreed budget.
- Proficient IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel.
- Valid CSCS card and full driving licence.
- Desirable: B & E class driving licence for safe towing of trailer/rig.
- Passion, enthusiasm, willingness to exceed expectations, quick learning, adaptability, and organization.
Work Hours
39 hours per week; additional hours and weekend work may be required.
