Residential Worker – Night Support

Location: Basildon

Salary: £34,169 to £43,232 per annum (includes allowance)

Working style: Fixed‑base worker, 37‑hour week with night shift 9:15pm‑7:15am and every other weekend off.

Role Overview

Support the Residential Home Manager in caring for young people aged 11‑17 who have experienced trauma, ensuring their safety and well‑being during night time and maintaining a secure environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Directly support children and young people in the residential home, meeting regulatory requirements and codes of practice.
  • Contribute to care planning, assessing individual needs and updating placement plans.
  • Facilitate positive family contact and support healthy relationships.
  • Encourage independence and self‑confidence by empowering young people to make informed decisions.
  • Collaborate with the management team to maintain a healthy, safe and supportive environment.
  • Assist with access to education and personal interests.
  • Support operational effectiveness, monitor care standards and lead shifts as required.
  • Work towards individual and shared objectives, reviewed annually as part of performance management.

What We’re Looking For

Previous experience in a children’s home is desirable, but many relevant skills can be transferred from other roles.

Essential Skills

  • Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or willingness to complete within 2 years – fully funded).
  • Strong communication and listening skills, able to engage effectively with others at all levels.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience working with young people to explore behaviours and understand individual needs.
  • Awareness of child protection issues.
  • Committed to promoting equality, diversity and rights, and protecting children from abuse.
  • Experience contributing to the development, provision and review of placement and care management plans, encouraging identity development.

Other Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Full DBS check required.
