Learning Scientist / Education Psychologist
Hours: 4–8 hours per week, flexible
Project: 3-4 months initially, with potential to extend
Location: Remote
Pay: Up to £25 per hour depending on experience (PAYE or Freelance)
About the Project
We are currently developing an innovative AI-powered online platform, the Ignite Learning & Careers Hub, which connects learning with future career pathways in technology, STEM and creative industries.
We are looking to embed evidence-based learning science into the design of the platform to ensure that children and young people (aged 7–25) develop the skills to learn effectively, retain knowledge, and build long‑term confidence.
This includes integrating principles such as metacognition, motivation, cognitive load, and effective learning strategies into platform features, user journeys and AI‑driven interactions.
The Role
We are seeking a Learning Scientist or Education Psychologist to help shape how learning works within the Ignite Learning & Careers Hub.
You will work closely with the Ignite Hubs team and technical partners to design a science‑backed learning framework that informs platform features, user experience and AI‑powered recommendations.
This role will consider how learning evolves across different age groups (7–24), ensuring the platform supports progression from early learners through to young adults.
This is a unique opportunity to apply learning science in a practical, product‑focused environment and influence how children and young people learn, reflect and progress.
Key Responsibilities
- Design a learning framework grounded in evidence‑based learning science across ages 7–25
- Advise on how principles such as retrieval practice, spaced learning, metacognition and motivation can be embedded into the platform
- Support the design of learning features such as quizzes, reflections, goal‑setting and feedback mechanisms
- Ensure learning approaches are developmentally appropriate across different age groups
- Work with the team to integrate learning science into AI‑driven recommendations and user journeys
- Ensure all approaches are inclusive, engaging and accessible for diverse learners
- Collaborate with the Ignite Hubs team and developers to translate learning theory into practical features and functionality
- Contribute to the development of “learning to learn” content or modules for students where appropriate
What We’re Looking For
- Degree or postgraduate qualification in Educational Psychology, Psychology, Learning Sciences or a related discipline
- Strong understanding of evidence‑based learning principles (e.g. retrieval practice, cognitive load theory, metacognition)
- Experience applying learning theory in practical contexts
- Experience working with children and/or young people
- Interest in improving how children and young people learn and develop
- Experience working with edtech platforms or digital learning products
- Understanding of how AI can support learning and personalisation
- Experience designing learning activities, interventions or user journeys
- Experience designing and creating learning content, modules or short courses (e.g. learning to learn, study skills, or metacognition‑focused content)
