Purpose of the role
The Student Success Tutor provides targeted academic guidance to a designated cohort of students, with a strong focus on supporting continuation, progression, and positive student outcomes. The role involves responding to academic queries, proactively identifying barriers to engagement or achievement, and arranging timely one-to-one interventions to address academic or pastoral concerns. Student Success Tutors play a key role in enhancing student retention by ensuring that students are effectively supported and signposted to appropriate academic and wellbeing services throughout their studies.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide proactive academic guidance and effective signposting to internal and external support services, ensuring students can access timely support to sustain engagement, continuation, and progression.
- Build positive, professional relationships with students to enhance motivation, confidence, and academic engagement.
- Enable students to become active partners in their learning, taking responsibility for their academic progression, attainment, and achievement.
- Deliver and support effective teaching and learning activities across lectures, tutorials, seminars, and online learning environments.
- Monitor student engagement, attendance, and academic performance using data-informed approaches, identifying early indicators of risk to continuation or achievement.
- Provide targeted academic support, including guidance on study skills, assessment literacy, and academic expectations.
- Identify and analyse barriers to learning and progression, implementing timely interventions or referring students to specialist support where appropriate.
- Apply knowledge of academic regulations, mitigating circumstances, deferrals, and assessment processes to ensure students receive accurate and appropriate advice.
- Track assessment submission patterns, including non-submission, late submission, and resubmissions, working with academic teams to support student outcomes.
- Monitor attendance on a session-by-session basis and work closely with Registry and Student Services to identify and address risks to engagement.
- Contribute to enrolment, induction, and transition activities to support early engagement and successful continuation.
- Identify and elevate emerging risks to the student experience, academic standards, or institutional reputation in line with NCG policies and procedures.
- Support the identification and early resolution of academic, administrative, and IT-related issues.
- Undertake personal tutoring responsibilities and associated administrative duties, including assessment- and examination-related processes.
- Address issues of academic neglect or student misconduct in liaison with academic and examinations teams, in line with institutional regulations.
- Maintain accurate and confidential student records in accordance with data protection legislation and institutional requirements.
- Communicate effectively with students and colleagues in person, in writing, and by telephone, working confidently one-to-one and with groups.
- Act in accordance with NCG policies, procedures, and values, contributing to a respectful, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from any UK recognised university and minimum 1 years of experience in working at any HEI environment in teaching or academic support role.
- A clear idea about how the academic team works at HEI.
- Good understanding of current practice and developments in own discipline.
- Understanding of evidence-led/practice-based teaching and its implementation in teaching and learning practice.
- Able to work as part of a team and independently as required.
- Able to coordinate and prioritise a range of activities effectively.
- The candidate must be flexible, approachable, and helpful with a strong customer service ethic as well as willing to go the extra mile to provide the best environment and supports to the students.
- Experience in tutoring and/or providing support for the academic experience of students.
- Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively and courteously in a team of academic staff.
- Ability to adapt to a flexible approach to the demands of a busy college/department to accommodate changes in priorities when required.
