As a GP Receptionist, you will be the first point of contact for our practice, welcoming patients, managing appointments, and supporting the smooth day-to-day running of our busy surgery.
Responsibilities
As the first point of contact for patients, you will deliver a welcoming and efficient service both in person and over the phone. Your responsibilities include booking and managing appointments, responding to patient enquiries, updating records, processing prescriptions, and providing general administrative support to the clinical team. You will demonstrate excellent communication skills, a calm and compassionate approach, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively under pressure in a busy practice environment.
- Greet patients and handle enquiries courteously in person and by telephone
- Book, cancel, and reschedule appointments, including requests for home visits
- Triage patient enquiries and pass messages accurately in line with practice procedures
- Keep patients informed of delays and address concerns sensitively
- Support GPs, Nurses, and the wider clinical team with administrative requests
- Order ambulances and interpreters as required
- Maintain familiarity with appointment and telephone systems
- Work effectively as part of the reception team
- Handle complaints in accordance with practice procedures
- Ensure reception and waiting areas are clean and tidy
- Advise patients on prescription turnaround times and non-NHS service charges
- Open and close the practice as required, following security procedures
Qualifications
- Educated to GCSE level or equivalent.
- GSCE Mathematics and English – C or above.
Experience
- Previous experience working in a GP practice.
- Proficient in using EMIS, Docman, and other practice IT systems.
- Applications from candidates without relevant GP practice experience will not be considered.
