Job Overview

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) invites applications for a substantive Consultant Ophthalmologist with a subspecialty interest in Glaucoma. This permanent consultant post is available from August 2026 and joins a large, progressive ophthalmology service delivering care across multiple hospital sites.

Working Hours and Pattern

Shift pattern: Monday to Friday, 9–5. The post will include a 10 PA contract, including DCC, administrative and SPA sessions. Sessions will be held at Inverclyde Royal Hospital and New Victoria Hospital, with 1 in 33 consultant on‑call duties for the Greater Glasgow and Clyde area.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and treat glaucoma patients.
  • Provide clinical leadership, service development, and improve practice.
  • Conduct research and audit activities to enhance clinical outcomes.
  • Deliver teaching and training, both formal and informal, to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Engage in professional development activities such as CPD, audit, clinical governance, appraisal, and revalidation.
  • Participate in management meetings and revise SPA as needed.

Qualifications

  • Full GMC Registration, licence to practice and eligibility for inclusion in the GMC Specialist Register.
  • UK trained: evidence of higher specialist training leading to CCT, or be within 6 months of confirmed entry date of interview.
  • CESR route: eligible only after completing CESR.
  • Non‑UK applicants: evidence of equivalent training.
  • Up to 2 EPA available for additional outpatient and/or procedure sessions or management activity.
  • Up to 2 PA in total, including 1 core SPA plus 1 additional non‑DCC.

Professional Skills and Attributes

  • Leadership and service development experience.
  • Research and audit experience; publications and presentations in glaucoma desirable.
  • Teaching and training in formal and informal settings.
  • Collaboration and teamwork with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong organisational and time‑management skills.
  • Willingness to work flexibly to support strategic aims including developing non‑medical staff roles.
