Salary: Grade F – £39,152 to £41,771 per annum, rising to £41,771, plus a 10% trainer allowance that increases to 15% after one year. More information on salaries and progression can be found on our pay and policies page.

Hours of work: 2 Full‑time vacancies, 37 hours per week.

Contract: Permanent

Location: Two vacancies: West Moors Training Centre and Devizes Training Centre. Opportunities for home working are very limited. Until January 2027, Devizes will be undergoing refurbishment and may require work across the service area.

About the role: This is an exciting opportunity to join Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service. As a Driver Trainer in our Operational Training department you will help our corporate staff keep communities safer and healthier. Responsibilities

  • Provide driver training to staff across all driving disciplines, including both novice and experienced drivers in accordance with the driver training policy and legislative needs.
  • Ensure the safety and conduct of students and resources during training and assessment, including daily vehicle checks, record keeping, and vehicle cleaning.
  • Seek opportunities to improve delivery methods and optimise the student learning experience to ensure effective use of time and application of learning in the workplace.

Ideal Driver Trainer Characteristics

  • Four GCSE passes – Grade A* to C / 9 to 4, including English and Mathematics, or an equivalent Level 2 qualification, including Level 2 functional skills, or a higher‑level relevant qualification.
  • Experience of delivering and designing training packages.
  • Ability to work independently with good organisational and time‑management skills, and as part of a team.

Other Information

  • You must possess a full current Category C driving licence held for a minimum of three years.
  • Use of your own vehicle will be required when a service vehicle is not available; most service vehicles are manual transmission only.
  • The role requires significant travel across Dorset and Wiltshire.
  • Some evening and weekend working will be required.
  • A Standard Disclosure & Barring Service check will be carried out before offer of employment.
  • Any offer of employment will be subject to full pre‑employment checks, including identity checks, right to work in the UK, medical assessment, reference verification, and an explanation of any employment gaps in the last three years.
  • Upon appointment you will be required to adhere to the Health Surveillance Programme and attend an occupational health appointment for baseline readings.
  • Trainer allowance amounts to 10% of salary, rising to 15% after one year (pensionable allowance).
