Job Overview

This bank staff position is for a Catering Assistant at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. The role requires an enthusiastic, motivated member of the team who can work across multiple stations and pick up shifts between 6 am and 8 pm seven days a week. Bank shifts are flexible and may include weekends and bank holidays with enhanced payments.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with patient meal service, rotating through service areas to meet all catering requirements.
  • Maintain cleanliness of premises and equipment, following cleaning schedules and departmental hygiene policies.
  • Operate and clean automatic industrial dishwashers.
  • Prepare and cook simple food items, including salads, sandwiches, breakfasts, buffets for functions and simple diet meals, following department recipes.
  • Plate and serve meals and beverages to patients and staff.
  • Probe temperatures of meals, recording results in accordance with department policies.
  • Issue food items to wards, ensuring correct storage, rotation and maintenance of min/max stock levels.
  • Fill, clean and look after ward beverage trolleys, fridges and restaurant vending machines.
  • Handle cash, check floats and secure takings in line with the Trust’s Standing Financial Instructions.
  • Complete necessary documentation as directed.
  • Handle heavy equipment and food items safely, including lifting, carrying, bending, twisting, pushing and pulling.
  • Prepare cutlery and other items in readiness for patient meal service.
  • Collect patient information, menus and dietary requirements using paper and electronic methods.
  • Complete all required training and utilise skills across all aspects of the role.
  • This role requires a DBS check.

Qualifications and Experience

  • GCSE English and Maths at grade C/4 or above, or equivalent qualification.
  • Foundation Food Hygiene qualification or willingness to complete it.
  • NVQ Level 2 Hospitality/Customer Care or willingness to complete it.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team without direct supervision.
  • Experience working as part of a large team and taking initiative when required.
  • Experience cleaning in a food environment or similar setting.
  • Previous experience working in a hospital or hospitality environment.
  • Experience using industrial catering equipment.
