Professional Duties of a Teacher
- Exercise general professional duties as required by the principal or board.
- Exercise particular duties assigned by the principal or board, including teaching, planning, assessment, and support of pupils.
- Planning:
- Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
- Teach pupils according to educational needs, including setting and marking work.
- Assess, record, and report on pupils’ development, progress, and attainment.
- General responsibilities:
- Promote the progress and well‑being of individual pupils and classes.
- Provide advice and guidance on educational, social matters, and further education, including record‑keeping.
- Communicate and consult with parents and approved external bodies.
- Participate in relevant meetings.
- Assessment and reporting: Provide oral and written assessments, reports, and references for pupils, ensuring confidentiality.
- Staff and professional development:
- Participate in staff development schemes and performance reviews.
- Review teaching methods and curricular programmes.
- Collaborate with the principal and colleagues on course development and pastoral arrangements.
- Discipline and health & safety: Maintain order and discipline, safeguarding pupils’ health and safety on and off school premises.
- Public examinations: Prepare pupils, assess for public examinations, record and report assessments, and supervise examinations.
- Management and administrative duties: Contribute to selection, induction, and training of teachers; coordinate and manage teaching staff; oversee the management of support staff and equipment.
- Attendance and assembly responsibilities as required.
- Workload: Availability for at least 195 teaching days (or 1,265 hours) per year, with limits on daily teaching hours and mid‑day supervision duties.
Qualifications and Experience
- Hold a teaching qualification recognized for grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
- Have at least 6 months of paid teaching experience with children and YP with special educational needs within the last 6 years.
- Demonstrable experience working with a range of professionals to meet SEN needs.
- Experience developing structured classroom plans and implementing communication strategies.
- Experience using effective classroom approaches to support social behaviour and emotional wellbeing.
- Experience with specialist equipment or skills to meet SEN needs.
- Experience coordinating or delivering a specialist curriculum that incorporates the voices and views of pupils with severe learning difficulties.
- Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up the post.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience teaching pupils with severe, profound learning difficulties and complex medical needs.
- Knowledge of working with agencies or organisations that promote specialised school curricula.
