Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Food Technology

Inspire. Empower. Transform.

A rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference

Are you an experienced HLTA or education professional who wants to make a real difference to young people facing barriers to learning? At Cloughside College, we believe every child deserves access to high-quality education, whatever their circumstances. We are looking for a committed, adaptable and compassionate colleague to join our team and help students re‑engage with learning, rebuild confidence and make strong progress.

This is a unique and rewarding opportunity to contribute initially to Food Technology, while also helping to deliver a wider personalised curriculum over time. You will work as part of a supportive and innovative team, delivering a blend of face‑to‑face and online learning and helping to ensure continuity of education for students with medical and social needs.

The post is offered for 12 months initially, with potential for extension. It offers an excellent opportunity to develop specialist experience in a highly rewarding setting and to play an important role in an evolving curriculum offer.

Role overview

The main focus of this role is the delivery of Food Technology. As part of a small and responsive provision, the successful candidate will also need to be flexible and willing to contribute to a broader curriculum offer over time, in line with the changing needs of the school. You will work with professional guidance from qualified teachers and leaders, with support for planning, sequencing and assessment.

What you will do

  • Plan and deliver engaging learning for individuals, small groups and whole classes, with an initial focus on Food Technology.
  • Work with professional support from qualified teachers, who will provide guidance on planning, curriculum sequencing and assessment.
  • Teach independently where appropriate, using your initiative while working within a supportive professional framework.
  • Help students re‑engage with education, build confidence and make strong progress.
  • Work collaboratively with health professionals, schools, attendance teams and external agencies.
  • Use online platforms and ICT confidently to support high‑quality learning across different settings.
  • Work across hospital and community sites and, where required, support learning in other appropriate settings.

Who you are

  • Qualified Higher Level Teaching Assistant, or a candidate with equivalent relevant qualifications or experience.
  • Experienced in working successfully with children and young people who may find education challenging to access, ideally in mainstream, special or alternative provision.
  • Able to plan and deliver engaging learning, including for mixed‑age and mixed‑ability groups.
  • Confident working independently, while also valuing collaboration, guidance and professional support.
  • Flexible and willing to contribute across a wider curriculum as the needs of the school develop.
  • Compassionate, resilient and committed to inclusive education, student wellbeing and high aspirations.
  • Strong in the use of ICT and online learning platforms.
  • Prepared to work across different sites and committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

Practical details

  • Salary: Grade 10, SCP 24 to 27 (pro rata)
  • Hours: 34.5 hours per week, term time only plus 5 days
  • Contract type: Temporary, 12 months initially
  • Location: Cloughside College hospital and community sites
