Regulation 5: Exercise of general professional duties
- A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require – if employed under a school’s reasonable direction of the principal or under a board that is not assigned to a single school, under the reasonable direction of that board and the principal of any school where the teacher may be required to work.
- Exercise of particular duties – a teacher employed as a teacher (other than a principal) in a school shall perform, in accordance with any directions reasonably given by the principal from time to time, such particular duties as may reasonably be assigned.
- A teacher to whom paragraph 1(b) refers shall perform, in accordance with any direction which may reasonably be given by the board or the principal from time to time, such particular duties as may reasonably be assigned.
PROFESSIONAL DUTIES
Planning
- Planning and preparing courses and lessons.
- Teaching according to pupils’ educational needs, including setting and marking work.
- Assessing, recording and reporting on pupils’ development, progress and attainment.
General
- Promoting the general progress and well‑being of pupils or groups of pupils.
- Providing advice and guidance on educational, social, further education and career matters and making relevant records and reports.
- Making records of the personal and social needs of pupils, except where it would compromise a teacher’s position.
- Communicating and consulting with parents.
- Communicating and cooperating with persons or bodies outside the school that are approved by the authority and Board of Governors.
- Participating in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above.
Assessment / Reporting
- Providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports, and references relating to individual pupils and groups of pupils (except where it would compromise a teacher’s position).
Staff Development / Professional Development
- Participating in staff development schemes and performance reviews if required.
- Reviewing teaching methods and programmes of work.
- Participating in arrangements for further training and professional development as a teacher.
- Advising and cooperating with the Principal and other teachers on preparation and development of courses, teaching materials, programmes, methods, assessment, and pastoral arrangements.
Discipline / Health and Safety
- Maintaining good order and discipline among pupils and safeguarding health and safety when pupils are on school premises or engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere.
- Participating in meetings related to curriculum, administration, organisation of the school, and pastoral arrangements.
Public Examinations
- Participating in arrangements for preparing pupils for public examinations, assessing pupils for such examinations, and recording and reporting such assessments.
- Participating in arrangements for pupils’ presentation and supervision during examinations.
Review and Development of Management Activities / Administration
- Contributing to the selection, appointment, and professional development of other teachers, including induction and assessment of probationary teachers.
- Co‑ordinating or managing the work of other teachers.
- Participating in administrative and organisational tasks such as supervising support staff, ordering and allocating equipment and materials.
- Attending assemblies; registering attendance; supervising pupils before, during, or after school sessions.
Staff Cover
- Supervising and teaching pupils when the teacher is unavailable, subject to conditions related to school enrolment and class level.
Number of Days / Hours of Work
- A full‑time teacher shall be available for work on 195 days in any year, with not more than 190 days teaching in a classroom situation.
- Teachers shall be available for duties at times specified by the Principal for a maximum of 1,265 hours per year, exclusive of preparation, marking, and travel.
- A teacher may not be required to teach (distinct from supervising) more than 25 hours in primary or special school, or 23.5 hours in secondary school per week.
- Teachers must have a break of at least 30 minutes between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. (or 2:30 p.m. for nursery units).
- Staff cover arrangements detail conditions based on school enrolment and class level.

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
Qualifications / Professional Membership
- Hold a teaching qualification that meets the requirements for recognition to teach in grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland.
Experience
- Minimum of three years’ demonstrable teaching experience, in a paid capacity in primary schools, within the last eight years.
- Experience of using a range of effective classroom strategies to support and challenge children of all abilities, including those with Special Educational Needs.
- Experience of using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning.
Other
- Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up the post.
Knowledge
- Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum.
- Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and Child Protection policy/practice.
- Knowledge of the SEND Code of Practice.
- Knowledge of teaching strategies to meet diverse learning needs.
- Knowledge of Information Technology systems such as digital classroom tools and use of tablets/mobile technologies.
- Knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching.
Skills / Abilities
- Effective teaching and classroom management skills to inspire and challenge pupils.
- Proven ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
- Initiative, problem‑solving and flexibility.
- Collaboration to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents, and the wider community.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team and to motivate self and others.
Values Orientation / Identification with School Ethos
- Evidence of how your experience and approach to work reflect the school’s values and ethos.
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of one year’s demonstrable experience of teaching at Key Stage 2 to achieve positive learning outcomes.
- Experience contributing to curriculum development, particularly in ICT.
- Experience in or ongoing professional development in ICT curriculum.
- Experience assisting with or coordinating ICT in a primary school.
- Studied IT/ICT to degree level or as a specialism or subsidiary subject during teacher training.
- Experience monitoring pupil progress, performance, target setting, and intervention.
DISCLOSURE OF CRIMINAL BACKGROUND
The Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (Northern Ireland) Order 2007 defines working directly with children or young people or in specified places as ‘regulated activity’. If you are recommended for a post that involves regulated activity, the Education Authority will be required to undertake an Enhanced Disclosure of Criminal Background. You will be expected to bear the cost of this certificate.
