Join our dynamic and forward‑thinking team at HMS as an Apprentice Greenspace Operative, where you will gain practical experience and develop valuable skills, working towards an NVQ Level 2 qualification. This is a 24‑month apprenticeship. Successful candidates will be expected to travel to their assigned college or workplace as required.

What Will You Be Doing?

  • Gain hands‑on experience in maintaining green spaces (e.g., mowing, pruning, litter picking, hedge cutting).
  • Learn horticultural techniques including planting, turfing, and specialist pruning.
  • Develop the skills, knowledge, and competence required to independently carry out all core tasks associated with the trade by the end of the apprenticeship programme.
  • Complete apprenticeship training and attend required courses to build theoretical and practical skills.
  • Train in the safe use of tools, machinery, and chemical treatments under supervision.
  • Report maintenance issues and suggest improvements to your supervisor.
  • Develop planning, organisation, and communication skills, including use of IT and documentation.
  • Participate in the company’s training, development, and competency programmes.
  • Learn to manage stock/equipment and follow health and safety procedures.
  • Work with other teams and contractors to ensure coordinated and complete service delivery.
  • Meet work standards, customer care expectations, and performance measures.
  • Attend college and complete all assessments required for the apprenticeship.

What We’re Looking For?

  • English and Maths GCSE at Grade 4 (C) or above, or Functional Skills Level 1 or Level 2 (or equivalent). For mature learners (19+/21+), entry requirements may be applied flexibly and GCSEs may be waived where candidates can demonstrate significant construction experience and/or site supervisory responsibilities. In such cases, suitability may be assessed through a skills assessment and/or professional discussion, and Functional Skills in English and/or Maths may still be required depending on individual circumstances.

  • Commitment to academic learning, including attending college.
  • Excellent time management and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Good IT skills and the ability to use communication tools effectively.
  • A customer‑focused attitude and the ability to work well in a team.
  • Flexibility and resilience in a fast‑paced work environment.
  • A commitment to obtaining a full UK driving licence by the end of your apprenticeship.

Assessment Day

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an assessment day to further evaluate their skills and suitability for the apprenticeship. Assessment days will take place on Tuesday 16th June 2026 at The Torus Fire Fit Hub.

College or Training Organisation

All our apprentices are enrolled in a local college in Liverpool, Warrington, or St Helens. Due to capacity limits, placements may be assigned to any of these colleges.

Your Training Plan

You will receive both on‑the‑job and off‑the‑job training over the course of 24 months, following a detailed induction and training plan. You will attend college on a day‑release basis. Upon successful completion, you will earn the Level 2 Horticulture Operative Apprenticeship.

During Your Apprenticeship

You will work across our three main vibrant heartlands – Liverpool, Warrington, and St Helens and surrounding areas, where you’ll rotate through a variety of dynamic workstreams, gaining hands‑on experience and building a broad foundation of knowledge along the way.
