Job Introduction
The Highways Department at the Royal Borough of Greenwich is pleased to advertise for a Highway Apprentice to join the team.
The Highways Team in the Directorate of Communities Environment & Central is responsible for the maintenance of the public highway across the Royal Borough of Greenwich, delivering work relating to the inspection and maintenance of carriageways, footways and street furniture in the Borough in accordance with contracts, agreements and all relevant statutory requirements and codes of practice, maintaining safety, minimising inconvenience to highway users and protecting the structure of the highway.
We are looking for someone with a keen interest in Civil Engineering and the construction industry, who is committed and eager to learn, and is motivated to deliver high quality work in a unique and exciting London borough.
Responsibilities
As a Highway Apprentice you will assist the Highways Team in carrying out the inspection, maintenance and repair of public highways, footways and associated street furniture. You will support the team in adhering to statutory standards and safety requirements, and in the use of relevant tools and equipment.
Qualifications
- GCSE Maths (Grade 4/C equivalent) and GCSE English (Grade 4/C equivalent).
- Working at the specified level in maths and English required for the qualification.
- Applicants who do not hold GCSE or Functional skills in maths and English will be screened for suitability.
- Have lived in the UK or EU for 3 years prior to applying for this apprenticeship.
- To qualify for Government funding, applicants must have the correct status (usually having been resident in the UK for 3 years).
Eligibility
- Applicants must be living in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
- Applicants must have ordinarily been a resident in the UK for at least the previous three years before the start of the apprenticeship and have the right to work in the UK.
- If you have been granted leave to remain, this must cover the entire duration of the qualification to be eligible for funding and for your application to move to the next stage.
- Not already qualified to the same or higher level in the same field.
- As some young people may turn 16 between the end of June and beginning of September, you would need to wait until you are 16 before starting your apprenticeship.
Eligibility for Specific Groups
- Children 16 to 18 years who are looked after by the Royal Borough of Greenwich and have been for more than 13 weeks.
- Care leavers who can be young people aged between 16 and 24 years (up to 25th birthday) who were looked after by the Royal Borough of Greenwich Children’s Services for a period of 13 weeks or more since the age of 14.
