Highly Specialist Speech & Language Therapist – Care Homes B7

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and energetic Speech and Language Therapist to lead and continue to develop the Speech and Language Therapy service within the Care Homes across North Cumbria. This role offers the chance to develop both clinical and leadership skills within this specialist environment.
The post holder will work closely with the Speech and Language Therapy assistant to deliver high‑quality Speech and Language Therapy provision within the care homes. A large part of the role is to provide training to care home staff on the identification and awareness of dysphagia.
The post will be based primarily at Workington Community Hospital but requires regular travel across North Cumbria to support care homes throughout the county.
The North Cumbria Speech and Language Therapy team is small, friendly, supportive and offers a range of ongoing training opportunities within a well‑developed supervision and peer support system.
Job Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver Speech and Language Therapy within care homes.
- Provide training and support to care home staff on dysphagia identification and communication.
- Travel across North Cumbria to visit and assess care home settings.
- Lead and support the speech and language therapy team, contributing to clinical governance.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to enhance patient care.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
- Registration with HCPC.
- Ongoing membership with the RCSLT.
- Formal training or specialist experience to Masters Level equivalence in dysphagia.
- Training in the management of swallowing and communication for people with dementia.
Skills and Aptitudes
- Ability to carry out and analyse assessment results.
- IT skills – including word processing and access to relevant software packages.
- Excellent presentation and training skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Effective time‑management, organisational and administrative skills.
- Proficiency in the use of telemedicine.
Personal Circumstances
- Car ownership.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the post.
Knowledge
- Advanced knowledge of elderly care.
- Evidence of leadership and management skills.
- Experience working in a care home environment.
- Knowledge of current national and local drivers, governance and risk for the care home population.
- Track record of driving service‑delivery improvement.
- Evidence of leadership training.
- Awareness of the EnCOP framework.

Disclosure and Barring Service Check
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check. If a standard or enhanced check is required, the cost will be deducted from salary over a four‑month period or paid as a one‑off payment.

Salary: £49,387 to £56,515 per annum (pro rata)
