Organisation

This apprenticeship will start with a 3‑month placement with Optomen Television, delivering Great British Menu at their studio in Stratford‑upon‑Avon, followed by a placement with another production company in the Midlands region for the remainder of the programme.

Location

Optomen Studio, Timothy’s Bridge Road, Stratford‑upon‑Avon, CV37 9NQ. Applicants must be able to travel to the initial location and to a Midlands‑based production site that will be confirmed. Travel costs are supported by the BBC.

Contract Type

13‑month fixed‑term full‑time contract (September 2026 to October 2027).

Salary

£24,650 per year.

Key Responsibilities

During the Optomen placement you will:

  • Print schedules, distribute call sheets, and support general admin in the production office.
  • Assist with daily studio set‑up, including prepping kitchen stations, organising ingredients, and ensuring filming areas are clean, camera‑ready and safe.
  • Support the Production Coordinator and crew with on‑set tasks such as moving equipment, fetching props, and relaying messages between departments.
  • Look after chefs, presenters and contributors, managing dressing rooms and escorting contributors to and from set.
  • Capture behind‑the‑scenes photos and short video clips safely and respectfully, without disrupting filming or revealing sensitive information.
  • Assist the production or digital team in selecting appropriate behind‑the‑scenes material for social platforms and monitor social trends related to food and cookery.
  • Draft captions, log key moments, perform basic photo editing and help maintain a consistent tone of voice.
  • Organise and label digital assets for easy team access and ensure all content follows brand guidelines and receives approval before use.

Responsibilities in the second placement will build on these core skills in a different production environment.

What You Will Study

You will pursue a BTEQ qualification through Bauer Academy, combining on‑the‑job experience with three two‑week training blocks across the nine‑month learning period. You are expected to meet learning objectives, deadlines and undertake self‑learning as part of the apprenticeship standard.

  • Enthusiastic about starting a career in television and comfortable in studio or production office environments.
  • Reliable, organised, detail‑oriented and hands‑on.
  • Friendly, calm, professional and able to work well with others.
  • Proactive and adaptable when priorities change.
  • Interested in food, factual entertainment or studio formats.
  • Desire to learn and develop practical production skills; a positive attitude, commitment and curiosity are most important.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be 18 or older when the apprenticeship starts (2 September 2026).
  • Live within commutable distance of Birmingham.
  • Have lived in the UK continuously for the last 3 years prior to the start of the apprenticeship.
  • Be legally eligible to work full‑time in the UK for the duration of the apprenticeship.
  • Not currently participating in an apprenticeship scheme supported by the BBC or another organisation.
  • Not have completed or hold qualifications in the apprenticeship subject at the same or higher level.
  • Be prepared to travel to agreed placement locations.
  • Be available for the in‑person assessment on 28 July 2026 at BBC Birmingham.
  • Be able to start on 2 September 2026.

Under‑age Eligibility

For candidates under 19 on 2 September 2026, completion requires Maths and English GCSE Grade 4/C or equivalent, or National 5 (Scotland) C or Functional Skills Level 2.
