Professional Duties

  • Exercise of general professional duties

    • Perform duties under the reasonable direction of the principal or the board as assigned.
  • Planning
    • Plan and prepare courses and lessons.
    • Teach, setting and marking pupils’ work.
    • Assess, record and report on pupil development, progress and attainment.
  • General
    • Promote pupil progress and well‑being.
    • Provide advice and guidance on education, social matters, future careers and information sources.
    • Record personal and social needs where appropriate.
    • Communicate with parents and external bodies.
    • Participate in relevant meetings (curriculum, pastoral, etc.).
  • Assessment and Reporting
    • Provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references.
  • Staff Development and Professional Development
    • Participate in staff development and performance review schemes.
    • Review teaching methods and programmes.
    • Engage in further training and professional development.
    • Advise and cooperate with the Principal and colleagues on curriculum, materials, assessment and pastoral arrangements.
  • Discipline, Health and Safety
    • Maintain good order and discipline, safeguard pupils’ health and safety.
    • Attend meetings regarding curriculum and school organization (including pastoral arrangements).
  • Public Examinations
    • Prepare pupils for public examinations and assess them.
    • Record and report assessments; supervise examination presentations.
  • Review and Development of Management Activities and Administration
    • Contribute to selection, professional development and induction of other teachers.
    • Coordinate or manage other teachers’ work.
    • Participate in administrative tasks related to curriculum, organization, pastoral functions, supervision of support staff, ordering and allocating materials.
    • Attend assemblies and register pupil attendance.
    • Supervise pupils before, during or after sessions.
  • Number of Days and Hours of Work
    • Full‑time teacher available 195 days a year, with specific weekly hours limits and mandatory breaks.
    • Regulated teaching hours and mid‑day supervision requirements.
    • Staff cover responsibilities based on pupil‑teacher ratios and school enrolment levels.

Qualifications

  • Hold a teaching qualification recognised in Northern Ireland.
  • Minimum two years of demonstrable teaching experience in a post‑primary school with positive learning outcomes.
  • Minimum six months experience in SPIMS or teaching pupils with additional needs.
  • Experience applying a range of teaching strategies to meet learning needs.
  • Experience using digital media and technology to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Valid driving licence or access to transport between campuses.
  • Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland before starting.

Knowledge and Skills (Interview)

  • Broad knowledge of the Northern Ireland curriculum across subjects.
  • Knowledge of statementing procedures and annual review processes.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection policy and practice.
  • Knowledge of the SEND code of practice.
  • Knowledge of a range of teaching strategies to meet learning needs.
  • Knowledge of digital classroom tools, tablets and mobile technologies.
  • Knowledge of current assessment methods to inform teaching.
  • Effective teaching and classroom management skills, inspiring and challenging pupils.
  • Ability to provide a supportive, inclusive learning environment.
  • Ability to collaborate to promote positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents and the community.
  • Ability to work as a team member, motivating self and others.
  • Evidence that your experience and approach reflect the school values and ethos.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience monitoring pupil progress, target setting and intervention.
  • Experience teaching children in withdrawal groups.
