Main duties of the job

The Consultant Paediatrician in Respiratory Medicine will play a key role in delivering and developing paediatric respiratory and sleep medicine services across West London Children’s Healthcare, primarily based at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital with cross‑site responsibilities as required.

The postholder will join an established multidisciplinary respiratory team and contribute to the provision of high‑quality inpatient, outpatient and acute respiratory care for children and young people. A key focus of the role will be supporting and developing paediatric sleep medicine and long‑term ventilation services across WLCH.

The successful candidate will participate in consultant attending and on‑call respiratory rotas, provide specialist respiratory and sleep clinics, and work collaboratively with colleagues across WLCH and partner organisations to ensure safe, effective and equitable care.

The role also includes active involvement in teaching, training, clinical governance, quality improvement and research, with opportunities to develop academic interests through close links with Imperial College London and the Imperial College Centre for Paediatrics and Child Health.

The postholder will contribute to service leadership, pathway development and strategic planning to support WLCH’s vision of improving outcomes and reducing inequalities for children and young people across North West London.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1. Provide High Quality Care to Patients

  • The postholder must be medically qualified and hold GMC specialist registration for paediatrics (with paediatric respiratory medicine preferred) and a licence to practice.
  • To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties of the post.
  • To ensure prompt attendance at agreed Direct Clinical Care (DCC) programmed activities.
  • To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and respond to their views.

2. Performance Management

  • Work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in clinical efficiency, quality of outcomes, financial management and operational efficiency.

3. Medical Staff Management

  • Ensure junior doctors’ hours are compliant with EWTD and New Deal.
  • Maintain systems for leave and cover within clinical areas, including on‑call commitments.
  • Participate in recruitment, team objective setting and annual appraisal of medical staff.

4. Governance

  • Review clinical outcomes using external benchmarks.
  • Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and analysis.
  • Engage with Public and Patient Involvement Panels and external clinical meetings.
  • Ensure NICE requirements are reviewed, implemented and monitored.
  • Maintain clinical guidelines and protocols for junior staff.

5. Strategy and Business Planning

  • Participate in business planning and objective setting for the Trusts.
  • Represent the Trust at appropriate clinical networks and external meetings.

6. Leadership and Teamworking

  • Collaborate with team members across both sites.
  • Chair regular specialty meetings.
  • Resolve conflicts through negotiation and discussion.
  • Adhere to Trust guidelines on leave and absence reporting.

Person specification

Education / Qualifications

  • Full GMC Registration
  • On GMC specialist register or within 6 months of obtaining CCT/CSER/CSER (CP) or equivalent at the time of interview: Paediatric Medicine
  • MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Enhanced DBS Clearance
  • Higher Degree relevant to Paediatric Respiratory medicine

Experience

  • Broad general experience in paediatric respiratory medicine
  • Evidence of training and expertise in paediatric respiratory medicine
  • Experience of managing paediatric on‑call provision
  • Valid BLS Training
  • Valid Level 3 Safeguarding training
  • Valid APLS and NLS provider
  • Skills and training in paediatric sleep medicine

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

  • Understanding of clinical governance audit
  • IT skills and computer literacy
  • Knowledge of budget management
  • Experience of managing hospital staff
  • Undergraduate, postgraduate and formal bedside teaching, experience in pathway redesign and improving patient treatment access times
