Process Design Control & Instrumentation Engineer

Full-time – Permanent. Region: North West UK. Compensation: GBP 40,000 – 75,000 per year.

  • Location: Manchester/Derby/Warrington (any site)
  • On 2 times per 14 days to any of the site
  • Clearance: BPSS
  • Experience Level: 4–15 years

Key Responsibilities:

Process Control & System Design

  • Develop control philosophies, narratives, and functional specifications for safety‑critical systems.
  • Define control strategies, alarms, interlocks, and operating logic.
  • Ensure control behaviour follows safety principles such as defence‑in‑depth, redundancy, and failure tolerance.
  • Support design, testing, validation, and commissioning of control systems (DCS, PLC, SCADA).

Safety & Risk Management

  • Contribute to Safety and Functional Requirements Specifications (SFRS) and safety/security cases.
  • Support hazard analysis and risk assessments (HAZOP, FMEA, FTA, SIL/LOPA).
  • Work with safety, cybersecurity and compliance teams to meet regulatory requirements.

Process Analysis & Instrumentation

  • Analyse process performance and system dynamics to support design decisions.
  • Identify improvements in efficiency, reliability and stability.
  • Develop instrumentation and measurement strategies aligned with functional safety requirements.

Required Skills:

  • Strong background in process control, system behaviour, and optimisation.
  • Proven experience developing control philosophies, narratives, and functional specifications.
  • Experience contributing engineering outputs to safety or security cases.
  • Knowledge of hazard identification and risk‑based engineering methodologies.
  • Familiarity with instrumentation, sensors, and control system integration.

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree in Electrical, Instrumentation & Control, Process, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent military experience.
  • Experience within nuclear, energy or large infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with UK and international fire protection standards (e.g. BS 5839, NFPA, IEC).
  • Knowledge of process instrumentation, control systems or electrical schematics.
  • Understanding of ISO 9001, ISO 45001 or equivalent safety and quality frameworks.
  • Experience managing or auditing equipment suppliers on technical compliance and documentation quality.
