Financial Controller (Commercial / Operations Focus)

We’re a proudly Western Australian-owned specialist in Service Truck Sales and Rental. We sell and rent service trucks to mining clients across Australia. Mining is the heart of our business — fast‑paced, high‑value contracts, heavy asset utilisation and tight cost control are everyday realities.
Our owner and Managing Director Russell Wells is hands‑on in the business and we like to keep the finance function commercial and directly supportive of sales, hire revenue, fleet performance and client relationships. We’re now looking for an experienced Financial Controller to join us full‑time, take ownership of the finance function and help drive smarter decision‑making without the corporate red tape.
About the role
You’ll report directly to the Managing Director and work closely with our operations & sales team. This is a genuine operational finance leadership position with end‑to‑end responsibility for management reporting, financial control, compliance and commercial insight. Including oversight of a newly established internal fabrication business unit building service trucks.
Key responsibilities
- Establish and manage financial reporting for the internal fabrication unit — including job costing, WIP tracking, build margins, cost control and performance reporting.
- Own the preparation of clear, timely monthly management accounts, variance analysis and KPI dashboards focused on hire utilisation, maintenance costs, margin by client/fleet type, cash‑flow forecasting with detailed commentary.
- Lead pricing strategy and commercial input for all rental and sale quotes.
- Analyse fleet performance — capex vs opex trade‑offs, residual values, depreciation impact and ROI modelling.
- Lead budgeting, rolling forecasts and ad‑hoc scenario modelling to support growth opportunities or manage cost pressures.
- Manage relationships with external accountants for statutory compliance, tax matters and year‑end packs.
- Serve as the key commercial sounding board for the MD on new opportunities, supplier negotiations, client issues and strategic decisions.
- Oversee day‑to‑day financial operations and strengthen controls.
About you
- CA/CPA qualified with solid post‑qualification experience.
- Proven financial controller or senior management accounting background — ideally gained in mining, contracting, heavy equipment rental/fleet, civil construction, resources services or similar industry.
- Strong commercial mindset — you think like an owner and can translate numbers into clear, actionable business advice.
- Advanced Excel skills, familiar with Google Sheets and Xero.
- Excellent communicator — you produce concise reports that non‑finance people actually read and act on.
- Comfortable working autonomously in a small, fast‑paced team environment.
