About The Role
As a General Operative on the Buckinghamshire Highways contract, you’ll be based at Amersham Depot and join the revenue team delivering essential maintenance across the county’s road network. Your primary purpose is to carry out reactive, emergency, and winter maintenance activities, alongside routine, cyclical, and minor civils works — ensuring roads, footways, and verges remain safe and reliable for local communities.
Key Aspects Of The Role Include
- Responding swiftly to incidents and seasonal demands
- Completing temporary and permanent repairs, site safety measures, and general highways tasks
- Working safely and to high quality standards every time, drawing on your hands‑on knowledge and experience
This varied, outdoor role offers the chance to make a direct impact on Buckinghamshire’s infrastructure while being part of a dedicated team focused on safety, responsiveness, and excellence.
If you’re reliable and ready for hands‑on highway work that keeps the county moving, this is your opportunity to contribute meaningfully every day.
Responsibilities
As a General Operative, you’ll play a key hands‑on role in keeping our highways safe, functional, and well‑maintained. Your day‑to‑day responsibilities will include:
- Carrying out a wide range of highway maintenance activities safely, efficiently, and to the highest standards — including patching, drainage works, signage, barriers, vegetation control, and other essential tasks.
- Working within our Zero Harm culture, strictly following the 4 Golden Rules in everything you do, and promptly reporting all Close Calls, Good Practices, and any observations to support continuous improvement.
- Complying fully with all statutory requirements, health & safety procedures, and company policies across every aspect of your work.
- Delivering operational activities to required quality standards, progressing work against agreed programmes, and selecting the right methods to ensure tasks are completed right first time.
- Making effective use of plant, equipment, and machinery, while evaluating job information to recommend practical improvements where possible.
- Responding to all reasonable instructions via your handheld device and supporting our emergency response provision (in and out of hours) to keep roads safe during incidents.
- Contributing to winter service operations, including gritting, snow clearance, and other seasonal activities as required (in and out of hours).
- Helping drive overall service profitability through careful and effective use of resources.
- Delivering excellent customer service by acting as an ambassador for Balfour Beatty at all times — communicating clearly with customers about works that may impact them, remaining courteous in public areas, and ensuring a positive experience for road users and stakeholders.
This role is varied, physical, and rewarding — you’ll be out on the network making a real difference to road safety and community infrastructure every day.
