Neway International are seeking an Approved Mental Health Practitioner (AMHP) – Social Care Qualified to join our client Powys County Council.
Powys County Council’s Adults Services division provides statutory mental health support across the region, delivering safe, person-centred interventions in line with the Mental Health Act and associated legislation. The service works collaboratively with health partners, community teams and multi-agency networks to ensure adults receive timely, lawful and effective mental health assessments and support.
The Approved Mental Health Practitioner will undertake statutory AMHP duties under the Mental Health Act, including coordinating Mental Health Act assessments, preparing reports, and making informed, defensible decisions regarding applications for detention or community-based alternatives. You will work within a multi-disciplinary environment, ensuring lawful practice, robust risk management and high-quality professional judgement.
Responsibilities
- Undertake Mental Health Act assessments as the designated AMHP.
- Coordinate multi-agency input and lead decision-making during assessments.
- Prepare clear, accurate and legally compliant reports and documentation.
- Assess and manage risk, ensuring the safety of service users and others.
- Provide professional advice on Mental Health Act processes to colleagues and partners.
- Work collaboratively with health professionals, police, ambulance services and other agencies.
- Ensure all actions comply with statutory requirements, local policy and national guidance.
- Maintain accurate case records and contribute to performance monitoring.
Essential Qualifications
- Qualified and currently approved AMHP status.
- Social Work qualification (or equivalent recognised professional qualification).
- Strong understanding of the Mental Health Act, Code of Practice and associated legislation.
- Experience undertaking statutory AMHP duties and complex mental health assessments.
- Ability to work autonomously, manage risk and make defensible decisions under pressure.
- Excellent communication skills and confidence working with multi-agency partners.
- Ability to produce high-quality written reports and maintain accurate records.
- Commitment to safeguarding, professional standards and anti-discriminatory practice.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience working within local authority mental health services.
- Knowledge of regional pathways, community resources and crisis services.
