Principal Mechanical Engineer

We are seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer to join a high-performing team within a cutting-edge aerospace organisation. This role combines technical leadership, hands-on engineering, and strategic project ownership, driving the development of high-precision, mission-critical systems across complex, multi-disciplinary programmes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and execute the mechanical engineering strategy, translating organisational objectives into measurable goals and delivery plans.
  • Serve as the technical authority across mechanical engineering, guiding design standards, best practices, and innovation.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the mechanical engineering team, fostering capability growth and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Own critical mechanical work packages and continuous improvement initiatives, coordinating internal engineers and external partners.
  • Collaborate closely with systems, electronics, and optical teams to deliver integrated, high-performance solutions.
  • Advise senior management on technical, organisational, and resource planning priorities.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, engineering standards, and industry best practices.

Skills & Experience

  • Proven track record in leading mechanical product development in high-tech aerospace or precision engineering environments.
  • 10+ years’ experience across the full mechanical product lifecycle, including concept, design, validation, and manufacturing.
  • Strong experience with optical or opto-mechanical systems.
  • Expert knowledge of mechanical design and drawing standards for precision machined and sheet-metal components.
  • High proficiency in SolidWorks; experience with FEA, flow simulation, or other engineering analysis tools advantageous.
  • Excellent hands-on engineering skills and knowledge of modern manufacturing and assembly methods.
  • Strong strategic, organisational, and project management skills, capable of managing multiple high-impact initiatives simultaneously.
