Main duties of the job

We are seeking a motivated and committed Consultant Clinical Oncologist specialising in Urological and Lung cancers to join our team at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS). This is a full‑time (11.25 PAs) post with part‑time options available.

You will work alongside the established Clinical Oncology consultant and multidisciplinary team to provide radiotherapy and SACT services as part of a busy and dynamic department. You will be based at Southampton General Hospital and will spend one day a week providing lung cancer outpatient and clinical services at the Isle of Wight NHS Trust. The UHS cancer centre provides comprehensive services to a large local and regional population, with seven linear accelerators providing radiotherapy services including SABR and SRS. Image‑guided and surface‑guided radiotherapy are implemented across all treatment units. You will join the dynamic and collaborative lung, oligometastatic and prostate SABR services at UHS.

Job responsibilities

  • Attending the weekly UHS Urology MDT and clinic
  • Attending the weekly IOW Lung MDT and clinics
  • Planning and supervising radiotherapy for Urology and Lung patients
  • Planning and supervising Systemic Anti‑Cancer Therapy for Lung patients
  • Conducting/supervising on‑treatment review clinics
  • Engaging in the Lung, Oligometastatic and Prostate SABR MDTs and Radiotherapy Peer review meetings
  • Teaching and training specialist trainees in Clinical Oncology and the wider multidisciplinary team
  • Actively engaging in the management, recruitment to and running of clinical trials
  • Participating in an on‑call rota for the management of Clinical Oncology patients out of hours, providing advice during evenings and undertaking daily ward rounds during weekends and Bank Holidays

Person Specification

Qualifications, Training & Experience

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Broad experience in Clinical Oncology
  • Experience in the management of lung malignancies and anal malignancies and in Acute Oncology
  • Recognised training in academic oncology with postgraduate qualification
  • SABR experience
  • Significant experience in Oncology research
  • Experience of working within the NHS
  • CCT in Clinical Oncology (including up to 6 months before CCT) or appropriate qualifications and experience to allow entry onto the Specialist Register

  • Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
  • Demonstrate good organisational skills including ability to prioritise effectively and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
  • Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Track record of research including presentation and/or publications
