We are looking for a caring and motivated Community Phlebotomist to join our team at the Luton Treatment Centre.
In this rewarding role, you will provide essential nursing care support to the Nursing Team, working primarily within a clinic setting while also carrying out home visits when required. You will deliver phlebotomy clinics at the Luton Treatment Centre and support Community Phlebotomists with domiciliary visits as needed.
This is a varied position offering the opportunity to work across different services. During periods of staffing pressure, you may be asked to provide support in other areas, working within your skills and competencies to help maintain high standards of patient care.
Responsibilities
- Supporting the Nursing Team in delivering high‑quality patient care.
- Running phlebotomy clinics at the Luton Treatment Centre.
- Assisting with domiciliary visits alongside Community Phlebotomists.
- Providing flexible support to other services when required.
- Delivering compassionate and professional care in both clinic and community settings.
- Shift times: 8:00 am – 4:00 pm or 11:00 am – 7:00 pm, depending on service and clinical needs.
- Providing basic nursing care support to the DVT Nursing team based at LTC.
- Supporting the taking of out‑of‑hours bloods to the laboratory in the evenings.
- Assessing patients’ registration forms and initiating investigations (blood pressure, weight, height, bloods).
- Providing basic dressings as directed by the nursing team.
- Setting up clinical areas prior to clinic.
- Chaperoning and assisting clients attending for procedures (on and off examination couch, escorting within the building and out to their car).
- Acting as an ambassador for the Luton Treatment Centre.
- Giving general advice to patients regarding services.
- Checking all equipment prior to clinic and reporting any defects to appropriate personnel.
- Taking appropriate emergency action and immediately informing the nurse in charge or manager.
- Assisting in the collection of information for audit purposes.
- Rotating stock according to expiry dates.
- Putting supplies, pharmacy, logistics and stores away.
- Ensuring bins are emptied at the end of each clinic.
- Assisting in taking requests from patients on the phone booking line for clinic phlebotomy.
Communication
- Greet patients attending clinics at LTC and signpost them accordingly.
- Record accurate, concise information on patient care within the patient notes.
- Maintain confidentiality of patients.
- Communicate patient information to medical/nursing staff as appropriate to patient care.
- Attend and contribute to service meetings.
- Ensure accurate labelling of blood bottles and safe secure transfer to the laboratory.
- Assist in making appointments for patients who have language, speech or hearing difficulties.
- Receive, screen and transfer telephone calls as appropriate, acting on own initiative and ensuring that accurate detailed messages are taken and recorded.
- Keep up to date with reading and replying to work email communications.
- Communicate with Phlebotomists, HCA’s Specialist Nurses, GPs, Nurses, Patients, local hospitals and other health professionals within the multidisciplinary team.
- Act as the patient’s advocate within the clinical setting.
- Be supportive and communicative with colleagues and clients.
Budgetary Responsibility
- Monitor stock in partnership with nursing team and coordinate ordering of supplies, logistics and equipment as required.
People Management
- Participate in the induction of students and Health Care Staff.
- Develop staff.
- Maintain own professional development and participate in appraisal and one-to-one processes.
Research & Development Activity
- Undertake research and development activity, e.g. hand washing and essential steps on a regular basis.
- Obtain patient engagement feedback continually; audits as and when required.
Clinical and Practice Governance
- Observe and maintain strict confidentiality with regards to any patient/family/staff/records and information in line with the Data Protection Act.
- Ensure data transferred electronically complies with Trust Information Governance and Information Security policies.
- Adhere to Trust risk assessment and risk management processes.
- Adhere to infection control policies and procedures.
- Undertake mandatory training and any other training relevant to the role as required by East of England Community Health and Care NHS Trust.
- Participate in clinical and other audits as required.
- Provide patients and their families/carers with information on standards they should expect from the team.
- Participate in clinical supervision regularly.
- Be ready and participate in relevant emergency processes for the team.
