Job Introduction

Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) – from September 2026

It’s an exciting time to be at Merdon . We are a welcoming junior school guided by our ACT values — Aspirational, Connected, Thoughtful — and judged Good by Ofsted. Our new enquiry‑based curriculum launched January 2026 is already enriching learning across the school. We make exceptional use of our outdoor spaces (woodland, pond, beehive and soon pygmy goats) to develop curiosity and character. You will join a warm, professional team committed to improving outcomes for all children, including those with SEND, EAL and those who are disadvantaged.

Role purpose and impact

We are seeking an experienced, qualified HLTA to strengthen classroom practice and accelerate pupils’ progress. You will plan and deliver curriculum‑aligned lessons, cover whole‑class teaching, and lead/support other adults to ensure consistent, inclusive practice that raises attainment in reading, writing and maths and embeds our enquiry‑based curriculum and ACT values.

Key responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare and deliver engaging, well‑sequenced learning activities across the primary curriculum, including whole‑class teaching under the direction of class teachers and senior leaders.
  • Contribute to curriculum planning by using your expertise to sequence learning, build vocabulary and make cross‑curricular links in line with our enquiry approach.
  • Supervise and direct other support staff (LSAs) during lessons and interventions to secure consistent practice and maximise impact.
  • Cover classes when teachers are absent or for planned release time, maintaining high standard of behaviour for learning.
  • Use and record assessment information to monitor pupil progress, produce intervention notes and feed back to teachers, SENCO and leaders.
  • Promote inclusion and independence by adapting activities so all children can participate and make progress.
  • Model and reinforce the ACT values; establish routines that support positive behaviour and wellbeing.
  • Actively contribute to school improvement priorities (curriculum development, inclusion, coaching) and participate in CPD.
  • Follow and promote statutory safeguarding requirements and the school’s child protection procedures.

Qualifications

  • Level 2 (or equivalent) qualifications in English and mathematics.
  • Proven experience planning and delivering learning across the primary curriculum, including whole‑class teaching and targeted interventions.
  • Strong understanding of how to support children with SEND and EAL so they access the curriculum and make measurable progress.
  • Confident use of assessment to adapt teaching and demonstrate impact.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with children, parents/carers and colleagues; commitment to the school’s values.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and child wellbeing.
  • Experience working with enquiry‑based/project curricula and using outdoor learning.

What we offer

  • Supportive leadership and a clear programme of CPD linked to school priorities (coaching, inclusive practice, curriculum development).
  • A collaborative staff culture and excellent outdoor learning resources.
  • The chance to make a measurable difference to children’s outcomes in a school on an upward trajectory.

About the Role (Key Details)

  • Hours: 30 hours per week. 8:30–3:30pm, Monday – Friday, Term Time Only (with 1 hour unpaid lunch break).
  • Contract Type: Fixed Term – 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027.
  • Salary: EHCC Grade D, starting at £27,780 full‑time equivalent (actual pay is pro‑rated for term time only). Higher grade considered for experienced candidates.
  • Vacancy Closes: 12th June 2026 (candidates may be called for interview before this date).

Safer Recruitment

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We will ensure that all our recruitment and selection practices reflect this commitment. All successful candidates will be subject to Disclosure and Barring Service checks along with other relevant employment checks.
