The Garden Centre Manager will primarily work for the Group General Manager, ensuring that the Garden Centre is adequately staffed, presentable, safe and customer friendly 7 days a week.
Responsibilities
- Oversee smooth running of the Garden Centre Team to ensure work schedules are set and achieved, encouraging productivity on an individual well‑defined basis.
- Adopting a practical, hands on approach to daily tasks and leading by example.
- Focused approach to management of till dept, serving customers and ensuring the dept runs smoothly.
- Manage all aspects of the gift dept, maintaining a focused approach regarding merchandising, stock replenishment and POS, overseeing dept deliveries and processing of purchase orders.
- Work closely with assistant managers to ensure tasks are completed as directed by the Group Managers, ensuring that high standards are maintained regarding stock replenishment, merchandising and POS.
- Oversee all aspects of staffing from recruitment & interviews, reviews & disciplinaries as directed by Group Managers.
- Define, monitor and review weekly work requirements, staff hours, rotas, holidays & shift cover. Ensure that staffing levels are adequate but well controlled week by week.
- Achieve operational excellence, ensuring the highest standards of display, compliance and inventory control are maintained through use of EPOS and annual stock take.
- Lead and inspire the team, ensuring that they are motivated and focused on customer engagement and operational excellence.
- Ensure excellent customer service is delivered in all areas of the garden centre and manage customer.
- Trained in: First Aid, Fire Safety, H&S and Manual Handling (training provided).
- Awareness of onsite health & safety, reporting to the Directors.
Skills and Qualifications
- At least 2yrs experience managing in a retail environment.
- Demonstrate retail awareness and a hands on approach to daily tasks to ensure high standards are maintained.
- Excellent communication skills to ensure that initiatives and actions are shared within the team.
- Demonstrate strong organisational skills & possess initiative to drive tasks forward.
- Good time management skills & ability to prioritise tasks.
- Strong people management skills, capable of leading and motivating a team, leading by example, capable of setting clear expectations and fostering a positive work environment.
- Proficient using IT systems, in particular Microsoft Office Packages, EPOS till system and cloud-based platforms for managing rotas & HR processes.
- Ability to stand for long periods of time and undertake tasks, which includes bending, lifting and carrying stock.
- Demonstrate a flexible working pattern to the rota and able to react to the needs of the business.
- Demonstrate good knowledge of health & safety.
- Interest in interiors and soft furnishings.
- Experience working in a garden centre.
- Active line management experience, in particular staff management, performance management.
Further Information
Salary: £35,360 per annum (based on a 40hr working week).
Area: Derry or Londonderry
Closing date: 30 Apr 2026
Working week will include a Saturday and will require flexibility.
