Cable Project Engineer

Location: Hybrid – Glasgow, Perth, or Aberdeen

Contract Length: 6 months (initial)

Hours: Full-time

Pay Rate: £850 per day (PAYE/Umbrella)

Role Overview

Our client has an exciting opportunity for a Cable Project Engineer to join its multi-disciplinary engineering team. This role will be key in supporting the development and delivery of a growing portfolio of transmission projects, contributing to the organisation’s Net Zero objectives.

The successful candidate will provide specialist cable engineering expertise across the full project lifecycle, ensuring high-quality, safe, and compliant technical solutions for underground cable systems.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Design

  • Provide cable engineering support across multiple projects, including:
  • Producing and reviewing outline cable system designs during development phases
  • Assessing technology options and underground cable routing selection
  • Performing current rating calculations using CYMCAP software
  • Identifying and managing interface requirements
  • Develop technical scopes and specifications for:
  • New underground cable systems
  • Modifications to existing transmission assets

Project Lifecycle Support

  • Contribute to all phases of project delivery, including:
  • Design development
  • Risk workshops (HAZID, HAZCON, HAZOP)
  • Construction, installation, and commissioning
  • Project completion activities
  • Collaborate with engineers and project managers to:
  • Identify and mitigate engineering and quality risks
  • Support informed decision-making
  • Conduct peer reviews of critical technical issues

Technical Assurance & Compliance

  • Review and assess:
  • Cable system prequalification and type testing reports
  • Contractor and consultant detailed designs
  • Witness:
  • Factory acceptance testing (FAT)
  • Site acceptance testing (SAT)
  • Ensure all designs:
  • Meet industry standards
  • Are safe, efficient, and fit for purpose

Stakeholder & Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration

  • Work closely with multi-disciplinary teams on transmission and infrastructure projects
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to support senior decision-making
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders

Safety & Regulatory Compliance

  • Promote Safety by Design principles throughout all stages of engineering
  • Ensure compliance with:
  • CDM Regulations
  • Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations (ESQCR)
  • Relevant HSE legislation
  • Embed best practices and lessons learned into engineering processes

Skills & Experience Required

Qualifications

  • Degree in a relevant engineering discipline (essential)
  • Chartered Engineer status (or working towards chartership) is highly desirable

Technical Experience

  • Demonstrable experience in:
  • Transmission network development, design, or specification
  • High Voltage (HV) cable systems
  • Strong ability to:
  • Assess complex technical issues
  • Evaluate and recommend engineering solutions
  • Knowledge of:
  • Transmission network legal and regulatory requirements
  • Industry standards and best practices

Project Experience

  • Proven experience working within:
  • Multi-disciplinary teams
  • Transmission or major infrastructure projects

Regulatory Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of:
  • CDM Regulations
  • ESQCR
  • Broader legislative requirements impacting transmission assets and projects

Soft Skills

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to present complex technical information clearly and concisely
  • Strong collaboration and stakeholder management capabilities
  • Proactive and detail-oriented approach to engineering challenges
