We have an exciting opportunity to join the Oxford Martin AI Governance Initiative as a Postdoctoral Researcher in AI & Geopolitics.

Overview

The Oxford Martin AI Governance Initiative (AIGI Oxford) seeks to improve the impact of AI on global societal outcomes through impactful research that is rigorously grounded in the social and computational sciences, decision‑maker education, and training the next generation of technology governance leaders. It is one of the few organisations in the world to focus on the governance of AI from both technical and policy perspectives.

Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Researcher in AI & Geopolitics will contribute to and lead research on the international and geopolitical dimensions of AI governance.

Key tasks include:

  • International governance frameworks
  • Great‑power competition
  • National security implications of AI
  • The role of global institutions and norms in shaping the development and use of advanced AI systems

The postholder will contribute to the Initiative’s research programme and its external engagement with policymakers, international organisations, and other stakeholders. The role combines high‑quality academic research with policy‑facing activity, supporting the translation of scholarly work into practical governance discussions.

Position Details

Full‑time, fixed‑term for 2 years.

Salary: £39,424 – £47,779 per annum. Pay Scale: RESEARCH GRADE 7.
