Blackthorn Health Centre and Hedge End Medical Centre have merged and are now known as Hamble Valley Health.
We serve a list of over 37,000 patients, primarily located in Hamble, Bursledon, Hedge End and Botley. Our goal is to provide high‑quality, accessible medical care while maintaining a supportive and pleasant working environment for clinicians and staff.
We are part of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board and offer general medical services to our patients.
We are a training practice, taking registrar doctors and teaching medical students from Southampton School of Medicine. The practice has seven partners: Dr Harris, Dr Cropley, Dr Graham, Dr Sonpal, Dr Shahsavanspour, Dr Yates and Dr McKenzie.
We employ fourteen salaried GPs, five Advanced Nurse Practitioners, a nursing team of fifteen and a reception/admin team of seventy.
The practice uses EMIS as a clinical system and is paper‑light, scanning all incoming correspondence into patient medical records.
Main duties of the job
We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic healthcare assistant with experience of general practice preferred. We are particularly interested in Health Care Assistants with the NVQ Level 3 in care or working toward it.
The role will cover part‑time hours (16–25 hours per week). Flexible scheduling is available for the right applicant.
The role will involve working across our three sites: Blackthorn Health Centre, Hedge End Medical Centre and potentially the urgent care centre at Bursledon Surgery.

As part of the nursing team, the healthcare assistant (HCA) will undertake nursing and administrative duties as deemed suitable by the Partners and Lead Nurse. Full training will be provided before any patient contact. The HCA will work alongside another member of the nursing team and will use computer and keyboard skills to organise and prioritise a varied workload.
You will act professionally at all times and adhere to practice policies, protocols and guidelines.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to GPs as appropriate
- Urinalysis
- ECGs
- Dressings as competent to undertake by the Practice Nurse
- Removal of sutures
- Administer injections such as B12, Pneumonia, Shingles, Flu & Covid vaccine
- Restocking of clinical areas and consulting rooms
- Maintain general tidiness and cleanliness of nurse and treatment rooms
- Check GP and nurse rooms, stocking and rotating items as required
- Assist with coil clinics
- Co‑ordination of annual calibration of equipment & annual stock take
- Participate in maintaining a safe environment for staff & patients
- Check emergency equipment and fridge temperature
- Daily fridge temperature check and weekly download of fridge temperatures
- A duty to advise senior staff of potential problems or errors within the range of assigned tasks
- Undertake other agreed activities upon completion of relevant training, provided you are deemed competent by the Lead Nurse
- Attend and participate in practice meetings as required

Qualifications
- NVQ Level 3 in care or working towards it is a requirement of the role; further training will be initially provided in‑house as part of the internal nurse training programme.
- Training requirements will be monitored by yearly appraisal.
- Personal development will be encouraged and supported by the practice; it is your responsibility to remain up to date with recent developments.
- Education to A level or equivalent.
