Motor Control Engineer

Company: Matchtech
Apply for the Motor Control Engineer
Location: West Sussex
Job Description:

A growing UK engineering business that designs and manufactures high-performance motor drive solutions (up to ~1MW) is looking for a Motor Control Engineer to join its product development team. If you enjoy taking algorithms from model → firmware → hardware testing, this role will give you real ownership across the full control stack.

You’ll work on next-generation motor drive products, collaborating closely with power electronics and test teams to deliver robust, production-ready control performance.

What you’ll be doing

  • Developing and improving motor control algorithms for Induction Motors and PMSM / BLDC drives (e.g. FOC, sensorless/sensored control, observers, torque/speed loops
  • Implementing real-time control features in Embedded C on MCU/DSP platforms (bare metal and/or RTOS depending on product line
  • Building and maintaining MATLAB/Simulink models for development, verification and rapid prototyping
  • Supporting new AC/AC technology development (concepts, feasibility, productisation
  • Working alongside power electronics engineers on inverter/control interfaces
  • PWM generation, ADC sampling/synchronisation
  • Current/voltage sensing, protection
  • Debugging, tuning and validating on real hardware (bench/integration testing, fault reproduction & resolution
  • Designing robust safety/behaviour strategies: fault handling, derating, thermal/current limiting, protective trip
  • Producing clear engineering documentation (design notes, test reports, release notes
  • Supporting best practices (reviews, testing approach) and mentoring as needed

What we’re looking for (must-have)

Strong, hands-on experience delivering motor control in an embedded product environment (Induction and/or PMSM/BLDC

  • Professional Embedded C development for real-time control systems
  • Solid control fundamentals: control loops, stability, discretisation, sampling/PWM timing, numerical precision (fixed vs float)
  • MATLAB/Simulink modelling/simulation for algorithm validation
  • Confident working in the lab with scopes/analysers and debugging across the HW/FW boundary
  • Clear communication and ownership mindset in cross-functional engineering teams

Nice-to-haves

  • Exposure to power electronics (inverter topologies, gate drives, sensing, EMI/EMC constraints)
  • EMC/EMI testing experience and working to industrial/automotive standards
  • Technical leadership/mentoring on embedded control projects
  • PhD (advantageous, not essential)
