Paediatric Clinical Research Nurse

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced paediatric nurse to join a dynamic and ambitious multidisciplinary surgical team at Evelina London, contributing to the growth of an expanding paediatric surgical research portfolio. The Evelina Children’s Surgery Service is the regional centre for specialist and general surgical care.

Main duties of the job

The paediatric clinical research nurse for surgery will play a key role in coordinating and delivering an expanding portfolio of research studies:

  • NIHR funded trial of gastric acid suppression versus placebo for babies with oesophageal atresia
  • Study of babies undergoing surgery on NICU versus theatres
  • Study of children and young people having pilonidal sinus trephination versus laser therapy

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Providing holistic nursing care of children and young people and their families on existing and new clinical trials
  • Assessing and managing care pathways for patients participating in clinical studies
  • Acting as an ambassador for promoting research utilisation and best practice through excellent interpersonal and problem‑solving skills
  • Maintaining clinical engagement and competencies by working 1‑2 clinical shifts per month on either Savannah Surgery or Mountain Surgery
  • Flexibility to accommodate patient visits and assessments outside of normal working hours (Monday‑Friday 09:00‑17:00)

Job summary

This role focuses on leading the delivery of three defined research studies, supporting infants, children and young people through every stage of the research journey from screening and consent to peri‑operative procedures and follow‑up.

Person Specification

Skills – Essential

  • Understanding of resource management, health and safety, clinical risk and quality issues
  • Understanding of professional and current issues in children’s nursing.
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and improvement agenda

Skills – Desirable

  • Knowledge of research governance and regulations (ICH/GCP and EU Directives)
  • Knowledge of ethical and legal constraints of clinical research.

Previous experience – Essential

  • Extensive experience of working within an acute paediatric ward environment as a qualified nurse with previous acute NHS experience
  • Experience of working on surgical ward or NICU
  • Previous experience of research and audit

Previous experience – Desirable

  • Experience of handling clinical incidents and complaints

Knowledge/Qualifications – Essential

  • NMC Registered Nurse (Child)
  • Must be a holder of current paediatric immediate life support qualification
  • Evidence of ongoing continuing professional development

Knowledge/Qualifications – Desirable

  • GCP accreditation
