About the role:
A well-regarded secondary school located close to Mirfield is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate SEMH Support Assistant to join their team from Easter 2026. This is a vital 1:1 position supporting a student with significant Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs, requiring someone with strong experience, resilience, and a calm, consistent approach. The role offers up to full‑time hours and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact within a supportive school environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a student with SEMH needs, ensuring consistency, structure, and emotional stability
- Implement tailored strategies to promote positive behaviour, engagement, and self‑regulation
- Work closely with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and external professionals to support the student’s individual plan
- Assist in creating a safe, nurturing, and inclusive learning environment
- Support the student both in and out of the classroom, adapting approaches to meet changing needs
- Maintain accurate records and contribute to reviews, meetings, and progress updates
- Uphold safeguarding responsibilities and follow school policies at all times
Pre‑requisites:
- Proven experience working with young people with SEMH needs, ideally within a secondary school setting
- Strong understanding of behaviour support strategies and trauma‑informed practice
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and consistent in challenging situations
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trust with students
- A proactive, empathetic, and resilient approach to supporting complex needs
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting student wellbeing
