Job Description:

Employment is expected to commence no sooner than November 2026. Successful candidates must demonstrate basic IT, Maths and English skills.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in the selection process of prisoners for the workshop.
  • Induct prisoners to the workshop and train them in health and safety, COSHH, and machinery and tool usage.
  • Support prisoners and tailor learning and training to individual needs.
  • Set work schedules and manage targets and quality standards, maintaining delivery of contractual arrangements.
  • Assess and evaluate prisoners’ skills up to national qualification standards.
  • Supervise and maintain discipline of prisoners, responsible for performance, motivation, discipline, appraisal and development.
  • Maintain regular communications via radio net in accordance with the Local Security Strategy.
  • Open and complete Assessment Care in Custody and Teamwork (ACCT) forms.
  • Conduct metal detector scans or rub‑down searches of prisoners attending and leaving workshops.
  • Provide quality assurance against product specification.
  • Log attendance and approve prisoner hours worked and wages including recording piece‑work where appropriate.
  • Carry out fabric and tool checks, maintain security of areas, log any faults, and undertake planned maintenance of machinery.
  • Contribute to prisoner reports, including parole and sentence planning.
  • Complete regime monitoring information and update training records.
  • Contribute to health and safety risk assessments related to the workshop.
  • Request materials and estimate usage to meet work targets.
  • Initiate product development reviews to maintain output levels and provide variety of work for prisoners.
  • Participate in self‑audit and in achieving Service Delivery Indicators.
  • Complete administration activities to support the smooth running of the workshop.

Experience and Technical Requirements

  • Preferable supervisory experience.
  • Experience using industrial standard machinery and equipment.
  • Commitment to achieving or already possessing a Level 3 qualification in the specialism or equivalent experience.
  • Possibility of being a qualified NVQ assessor.
  • For work with young people, must successfully complete a suitability assessment.

Additional Requirements

  • Regular unsocial hours (outside 07:00‑19:00 hrs Monday‑Friday) with a 20 % additional pay.
  • Hybrid working may be available where business needs allow; subject to discussion and review.
  • Standard full‑time working hours of 37 hrs per week (excluding unpaid breaks).
