SEN Academic Mentor

Could you provide the steady support a Year 9 pupil with Autism needs to feel settled and successful in school? Are you looking for meaningful secondary SEN experience before moving into educational or clinical psychology?

  • £85 – £100 per day
  • ‘Good’ secondary school, Willenhall
  • Start September 2026, finish July 2027
  • 1:1 support for a pupil in Year 9 with Autism

The Role

Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a Year 9 pupil with Autism across the school day. You will help the pupil follow routines, stay engaged in lessons, manage transitions, and access learning with greater confidence, while feeding back clearly to teachers and the SENCO. Schools are expected to follow the SEND Code of Practice and use a graduated approach to identify need, put support into place, and review its impact.

The Candidate

You are calm, observant, and able to build trust through consistency and clear communication. You want practical school‑based experience, you can stay patient in a busy secondary setting, and you are interested in how structured support helps pupils with additional needs feel included and make progress. This role would suit a graduate who wants relevant SEN experience before progressing into educational or clinical psychology.

Requirements

  • Degree – A 2:2 or above in any subject.
  • Communication – Clear and confident verbal and written communication.
  • Enhanced DBS – Must hold or be willing to obtain an Enhanced DBS certificate.
  • Desire to work in education/with children – Genuine interest in supporting pupil progress and wellbeing.
  • Career Goals – A desire to pursue a career in educational or clinical psychology.

The School

This ‘Good’ secondary school in Willenhall offers the chance to build valuable SEN experience in a setting where consistency, structure, and purposeful support matter. You will work closely with teaching staff and the SENCO in a role that gives you direct exposure to day‑to‑day SEND provision, practical intervention, and the strategies schools use to help pupils with Autism access learning more successfully. National Careers guidance says SEN teaching assistants support teachers to help children with disabilities and special educational needs.
