Apply for the Operative (Over Head Line Equipment)
Location: West Bromwich
Job Description:

Who We Are

We are Central Route. We are the Heart of Britain’s Railway. More than a million people rely on us every week, and we help transport nearly a million tonnes of freight every month. But we are more than just tracks and trains, we are a catalyst for jobs and opportunities, a connection to leisure and time with family and friends, and a foundation for communities and neighbourhoods.

We are a key part of the national network, with Birmingham New Street – the busiest station outside London and the hub of the railway – connecting England, Scotland and Wales, with hundreds of services arriving and leaving every day.

About the Role

Our OLE team is essential to keeping the railway running safely and reliably. You’ll be working on the electrified infrastructure that powers our trains – maintaining, inspecting, and upgrading overhead lines and support systems. It’s a hands‑on, safety‑critical role that offers variety, technical challenge, and the chance to make a real impact on the railway every day.

As this is an entry‑level role, our OLE Operatives support and learn from OLE Technicians and Team Leaders. The role may involve fetching, carrying and using plant tools. Teamwork forms a critical part of the job, alongside a heightened focus on safety, as you’ll often work next to moving trains travelling at high speed. All Operatives receive full training and guidance, learning how to use a range of tools and machinery safely.

Be prepared to work a varied shift pattern, including on‑call duties, weekend and night work. The roster will be provided in advance to allow you to make plans with family and friends. You will also need to be prepared to work in all weather conditions, at all times of the year.

This is a brilliant opportunity to kick start a career within the railway.

Please note you will be required to live within a 60‑minute radius of the location stated on this advert.
