The Role
As an Embedded Software Engineer or Software Engineer you will join the OpTech team in Intelligence Security Solutions, providing cutting‑edge solutions to protect sovereign states from ever‑changing and increasingly sophisticated threats.
Responsibilities
- Be responsible to the Project Design Authority for software development and related software engineering activities
- Solve technically challenging problems from rapid developments to full‑scale system developments
- Apply rigorous engineering practices such as analysing, designing, implementing, testing, supporting and maintaining solutions
- Innovate in the application and integration of digital hardware technologies to build novel embedded systems
- Realise a system into functional components and decompose it into a backlog of deliverable user stories
- Communicate ideas with multiple stakeholders and customers at all levels
Essential Experience
- Operate both independently and collaboratively as part of a closely coupled team
- Extensive software development experience in a range of programming languages such as C, C++, Python, Java or C#
- Develop and integrate software systems using both bare‑metal and open‑source/commercial operating systems
- Knowledge and implementation of complex software solutions
- Previous experience developing for embedded platforms
- Prior experience with unit testing and CI/CD tools
- Comfortable using both Linux and Windows operating systems
- Work in a rigorous engineering environment using configuration management and change‑management processes and tools
- Multithreading development and debugging experience

The role is 37 hours per week and is fully on‑site.
Security Clearance
All applicants for this role must be eligible for eDV clearance, as a minimum. Many roles in QinetiQ are subject to national security vetting. Applicants who already hold the appropriate level may transfer it upon appointment. Some roles have additional restrictions based on nationality or previous nationalities.
The Malvern facility is noted for its work in electronic warfare, surveillance, and complex system integration, contributing significantly to the UK’s defence capabilities. Developing technologies for military and civilian applications, including sensors, communications and cyber security.
