Position
A Band 8a post combining clinical specialist roles with local operational leadership on the Birmingham Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull sites. A suitable band 7 staff member may develop into the 8a role with successful competence training.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead Orthotist providing a clinical specialist Orthotics service within associated specialist clinics across the sites, primarily the HGS sites, in collaboration with the QEHB.
- Take clinical responsibility for assessment and management decisions for referred patients.
- Ensure clinical effectiveness across the Orthotics service clinic by utilising evaluation and research skills.
- Provide strong clinical leadership to deliver an effective, high‑quality Orthotics Service for patients.
- Lead and support audit and research projects to evaluate service delivery.
- Educate, train and develop orthotics staff to facilitate patient flow and respond to priorities.
- Regularly review clinical practice delivery, identify new ways of working and advance extended clinical skills.
- Collaborate with medical, nursing, AHP and other healthcare colleagues within UHBFT and outside the Trust to optimise patient management, including implementing and delivering education and training to cross‑professional groups.
- Develop and maintain key working relationships with Consultant and nursing teams.
- Work alongside procurement to facilitate an annual review of preferred suppliers and locum orthotists.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- Relevant AHP Degree specific to the role.
- Evidence of continuous professional development.
- Clinical qualification at degree level or equivalent.
- Current professional registration with the HCPC.
Desirable
- Management, Leadership, or teaching qualification.
- Master’s degree or equivalent.
Experience
Essential
- Extensive clinical experience in a relevant clinical area.
- Significant experience working as part of an MDT.
- Significant experience as a clinical leader including direct clinical supervision.
- Significant experience in education and clinical training of others.
Desirable
- Experience managing budgets and resources.
- Experience in clinical pathway development and redesign.
- Managing programmes of organisational change that have led to tangible improvements.
- Experience of patient and public engagement.
- Experience of operational management knowledge and skills.
