Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust are looking to appoint a locum part-time (7.5 PA) Consultant Paediatrician with an interest in diabetes to provide clinical support to the general paediatric department at Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) Woolwich. The post holder will have responsibility to deliver a general paediatric service and manage a clinical caseload. No NICU cover is expected.

Main duties of the job

This is a substantive consultant post in general paediatrics at Lewisham & Greenwich NHS Trust providing clinical support to the general paediatric department. A sub‑speciality interest in paediatric diabetes is required. We are looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic consultant paediatrician, who is committed to maintaining the highest standards in patient care, and who shares in the team vision to develop the paediatric services at Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Together with the other paediatricians, provide a service for children on the QEH site in acute general paediatrics. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the department as per the job plan.
  • Shared responsibility with the other General Paediatricians for providing 7 day a week cover for the paediatric ambulatory unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleague’s periods of annual leave and short-term sickness.
  • Be responsible for the paediatric diabetes service – specifically running outpatient clinics, reviewing inpatients, giving advice and assisting in service development as required.
  • Be aware of and deal with safeguarding issues as required, and manage patients with advice from the safeguarding team.
  • Carry out outpatient duties with appropriate administration and patient follow up.
  • Be aware of and assist in divisional objectives through clinical work e.g. Electronic discharges within 24 hours, DNA rates, infection control.
  • Standard operating procedure of consultant responsibilities is currently being finalised.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • Medical degree, MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP/MRCPCH or equivalent
  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) or be eligible for registration within six months of interview.
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non‑UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT and be on the GMC Specialist Register/Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) application in a non‑CCT specialty awaiting approval.
  • Training relating to Paediatric Diabetes.
  • Child Protection/Safeguarding training (minimum Level 3) up to date.
  • Accredited training in paediatric Diabetes.

Clinical Experience

  • Experience and training equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Paediatrics.
  • Recent experience/familiarity of UK hospital systems and practices.
  • Experience in managing children in the acute general ward, ambulatory and outpatient setting.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on and manage a range of problems in the acute Paediatric setting, including safeguarding issues.
  • Ability to deal with complex clinical situations in the core areas of the post.
  • Experience working independently at Consultant Level.
  • Broad experience of working within the NHS.

Clinical Audit

  • Experience running a quality improvement project.
  • Shows an understanding of clinical governance, patient safety and corporate risk.
  • Understanding of NHS systems and audit processes.
  • Evidence of service improvement projects and audits.
  • Quality improvement project relating to general paediatrics or diabetes.
  • Evidence of involvement and/or experience in risk processes such as Serious Incident reviews and patient safety systems.

Teaching Experience

  • Experience and interest in undergraduate teaching.
  • Skill and ability in formal and informal teaching for both under/postgraduate students and nursing/midwifery staff.
  • Educational supervision accreditation.
  • Experience of supervising junior doctors at all grades.
  • Previous experience in trainee supervision.
  • Higher teaching qualification.

Management and Administrative Experience

  • Understands the management structure of the NHS. Evidence of risk management.
  • Ability to manage and lead a multidisciplinary team.
  • Appropriate understanding of NHS directives regarding consultant clinical practice including clinical governance.
  • Ability to prioritise administrative tasks and to work co‑operatively with administrative and clerical staff.
  • Training/experience in NHS management.
  • Experience in managing and leading specialist units, directorate teams and working.

IT

  • Ability to use Microsoft office packages, e.g. MS Word, Excel, Access & PowerPoint.
  • Ability to use patient information systems.

Research Experience

  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems.
  • Publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
  • Previous research experience.
  • Presentations at National or International meetings.
