Overview
Consultant Clinical Immunologist – supporting the clinical immunology service at Derriford Hospital for patients across Devon and Cornwall (population approx. 2 million) with primary immunodeficiency (adults and children) and allergy (adults). The service is based in the Eden Unit, a dedicated outpatient and day‑case area for immunodeficiency, allergy and non‑malignant haematology. The department receives approximately 2,000 referrals for new patients.
Responsibilities
The appointee will work with the existing clinical team to provide and develop a clinical service for the investigation and management of patients with disorders of immunity, principally primary and secondary immunodeficiency and allergy. Duties include:
- Conduct regular outpatient clinics, day‑case attendance, ward reviews, telephone and written consultations.
- Manage new and follow‑up patients in the Allergy service, supervise investigations including food and drug challenges and desensitisation therapy.
- Collaborate with consultant and specialist nurses, travelling to outreach primary immunodeficiency clinics in peripheral hospitals as agreed.
- Lead and maintain direction of the immunology diagnostic laboratory, ensuring a cost‑effective, high‑standard service and undertaking appropriate development in line with new immunology advancements.
- Contribute to the Peninsula Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service in collaboration with the immunology laboratory lead consultant.
- Participate actively in the training of specialist registrars, clinical scientists and biomedical scientists, and engage in undergraduate and postgraduate educational activities.
- Contribute to the internal audit programme and participate in all relevant external quality assessment schemes.
- Occasionally fulfil budget holder responsibilities, rotating with other consultants.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Full GMC registration and a licence to practice (eligible within six months of interview).
- Complete the GMC‑approved JRCPTB curriculum in Immunology or demonstrate equivalent knowledge, training and experience of fundamental Immunology and diagnostic laboratory practice.
- Hold the FRCPath (Immunology) and MRCP (UK) (or provide evidence of equivalent training).
- Holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or CESR in immunology, or within six months of award of CCT by interview date.
- Experience in laboratory diagnostic work and managing immune deficiencies.
Desirable qualifications include research trial experience, teaching qualification, experience of haematological malignancy and research experience.

- Four Consultant Immunologists – Service line co‑leads and clinical directors.
- Senior nursing team comprising an immunology nurse consultant (part‑time) and two band 7 senior specialist nurses.
- Support staff including research nurses, ward nurses, specialist registrars, allergy specialists, a specialist psychologist and a dietician.
- Administrative team led by a Clinical Admin Manager with additional coordinators and secretaries.
- Diagnostic Immunology laboratory staff including a senior manager, principal clinical scientist and clinical scientists.
