Consultant in Respiratory Medicine – Pleural Disease & Lung Cancer

We are looking to appoint a Whole‑Time Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine with an interest in pleural disease and lung cancer to work at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, based at the Northern General Hospital. This post offers the opportunity to deliver first‑class specialist clinical care and develop the specialty services in a large university teaching hospital.
Full registration with the GMC, a licence to practice, and membership of the Royal College of Physicians are required. Applicants must hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Respiratory Medicine and General (Internal) Medicine, or be eligible for a CCT within six months of the interview date.
Persons who are unable to work full‑time may be considered, with job content modification discussed on a personal basis with the Trust and consultant colleagues.

Qualifications
- Registered or eligible to be registered with the GMC, holding a licence to practice.
- MRCP or equivalent.
- Name on the specialist register for Respiratory Medicine and GIM, or eligible within 6 months of interview.
- Higher medical or biomedical degree (MD or PhD).
- Additional lung cancer/pleural specialist experience, such as a fellowship.
Clinical experience
- Substantial experience in Respiratory Medicine.
- Ability to provide an expert opinion and to work as an independent practitioner.
- Subspecialty experience to complement departmental needs.
Research
- Ability to critically assess and incorporate research into clinical practice.
- Experience of research related to Respiratory Medicine.
- First‑author papers in high‑quality, peer‑reviewed journals.
Teaching and training
- Experience of teaching medical students and junior doctors.
- Willingness and ability to teach at all levels.
Continuous Professional Development
- Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months.
- Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio.
Management and Administration
- Experience working in a multi‑disciplinary team.
- Awareness of current NHS issues.
- Ability to work with management and previous experience of management groups.
Clinical governance and audit
- Committed to and understands principles of clinical governance.
- Experience in performing clinical audit.
- Understands requirements of Medical Appraisal and Revalidation.
- Completion and publication of a substantive audit or service improvement project.
Personal attributes
- Demonstrates behaviour consistent with PROUD values.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
Competency and clinical skills
- Demonstrable competence in Respiratory Medicine and General Internal Medicine.
- Ability to practice evidence‑based medicine.
- Ability to set up or develop a specialist service.
