As a Senior Dental Nurse, youll provide clinical andoperational support. Youll play a key role in maintaining continuity of careand upholding the highest standards in infection control, safeguarding,compliance, and patient experience.
Yourresponsibilities will include:
Providehigh-quality chairside assistance to dentists during a wide range of dentalprocedures
Supportand mentor junior dental nurses and trainees
Ensurecompliance with CQC regulations, HTM 01-05, and cross-infection controlstandards
Overseedaily clinical operations, ensuring surgeries are prepared and maintained to ahigh standard
Managestock control, ordering dental supplies and maintaining equipment
Assistwith patient care, ensuring a positive and comfortable experience
Maintainaccurate patient records in line with GDPR and practice policies
Supportpractice management with audits, inspections, and administrative tasks
Leadby example in professionalism, teamwork, and patient care standards

JobSummary
The Senior Dental Nurse plays a keyleadership role in supporting the Practice Manager to ensure the efficient andsmooth day-to-day running of the practice. They will help embed and monitorchange and ensure that the dental nursing and clinical support teams provideconsistently high-quality support to clinicians, enabling the delivery of safeand effective patient care.As a professional lead for the dental nursing team, the post holder willdevelop excellent communication and collaborative working, encouraging apositive culture and high standards of clinical practice. They will helpdevelop the team and ensure the delivery of efficient, patient-centredservices.The post holder will have agreed Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) aligned tocompany objectives, and their performance will be monitored and supportedthrough regular performance reviews and ongoing development.
Keyaccountabilities:
Leadership and Operational SupportWork closely with the Practice Manager to deliver against company objectivesand practice-specific KPIs.Deputise for the Practice Manager when required, including attending meetingsand presenting reports.Support the day-to-day delivery and performance of the practice team, helpingto drive service improvement and efficiency.Contribute to the successful implementation of operational changes and newinitiatives.
Team Development and SupportAct as a role model and clinical lead for the dental nursing team.Support the recruitment and selection of dental nursing and clinical supportstaff, in line with Smile Together procedures.Support, coach and mentor trainee dental nurses through their training andqualification process.Promote team wellbeing and maximise attendance through proactive support andappropriate escalation of issues.
Performance ManagementTake ownership of agreed individual KPIs and contribute to the achievement ofpractice-wide performance targets.Participate in regular performance reviews, identifying opportunities forpersonal development and service enhancement.Monitor team performance and contribute to ongoing feedback, training, andperformance conversations.Help embed a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, andprofessional growth.
Clinical Compliance and GovernanceMonitor and uphold standards of infection prevention and control as thedesignated lead for the practice.Act as the Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS), ensuring compliance withall relevant regulations.Support the management of clinical governance, risk assessments, clinicaleffectiveness, and health and safety protocols.Ensure all policies, protocols, and guidelines are consistently implementedand adhered to across the practice.Maintain robust systems for the servicing, repair and maintenance of dentalequipment and stock management.
Safeguarding and Patient SafetyAct as the first point of contact for any safeguarding concerns (children oradults), ensuring appropriate, timely responses in accordance with SmileTogether policy.Support a safe, secure working environment and ensure all incidents,accidents, and near misses are reported and managed appropriately.
Strategic ContributionSupport the operations team in delivering innovation and transformationacross clinical teams in line with strategic goals and contract requirements.Contribute ideas and solutions that improve patient experience andoperational efficiency.Professionally represent Smile Together, acting as a positive ambassador forour mission, values, and culture.
Professional DevelopmentMaintain full GDC registration without conditions.Take responsibility for your continuing professional and personaldevelopment, engaging with training provided via Smile Togethers TrainingAcademy and Perform platform.Actively engage in audit activities, planning sessions, team meetings, andother opportunities for professional engagement and improvement.
Additional DutiesParticipate in wider organisational change and service developmentinitiatives.Undertake any other reasonable duties as requested by the Practice Manager,Service Manager, or wider Smile Together Management Team.
Performance Management and KPIsThis role is subject to performance management against clearly defined KeyPerformance Indicators (KPIs), which will be agreed with the post holder andregularly reviewed. These may include (but are not limited to):Clinical governance and infection control complianceCompletion and support of training for trainee dental nursesTeam attendance and wellbeingDelivery against equipment maintenance and stock control targetsSafeguarding responsibilities and incident managementPatient experience and service delivery improvementsParticipation in audits and internal development activities
Person Specification
Qualifications
- NEBDN National Certificate in Dental Nursing or NVQ Level 3 in Dental Nursing (DN)
- Full registration with the General Dental Council and Professional Indemnity Insurance
Experience
- Post qualification experience, minimum 5 years
- Competency in the common aspects of dental nursing and experience of a wide range of dental procedures acquired through training and clinical experience
- Demonstrable understanding of all aspects of pain and anxiety management, particularly for anxious patients
- Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and professional manner, and be competent and confident in dealing with patients who need urgent and emergency dental care
- Evidence of/commitment to continuing
- professional and personal development
Knowledge
- Familiarity with NHS dental services
- regulations and knowledge / acceptance of NHS / local policies and guidelines
- Trained to recognise and respond to medical emergencies (i.e. Immediate Life Support Techniques)
- Knowledge of systems of care provision and
- current health and safety regulations including adherence to COSHH guidelines and ionising radiation regulations, and compliance with HTM 01 05 infection control procedures
- Awareness of and ability to keep confidentiality and handle sensitive data
- Knowledge of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and NHS Confidentiality Guidelines (e.g. Caldicott) and their implications
