Job Description:

Our client, a local authority in the West Midlands, is currently recruiting for a Principal Commercial Property Lawyer to join their award‑winning in‑house Legal Services team on an initial 3‑month locum basis.

The position is offered on a full‑time basis, working 37 hours per week with a flexible working style, including hybrid working (2 days per week in the office), and a flexible hourly rate that is negotiable depending on candidate’s expectations and experience.

The ideal candidate will be a qualified Solicitor, Barrister or Legal Executive with extensive commercial property experience and a proven track record of leading or delivering major development, regeneration or strategic property projects.

Duties will include (but are not limited to):

  • Leading a team of 12 legal professionals, including Solicitors, Legal Executives, a Trainee Solicitor and a Paralegal
  • Acting as the principal legal advisor on high‑profile commercial property transactions and regeneration schemes
  • Managing a diverse caseload including acquisitions, disposals, leases, development agreements and strategic land matters
  • Working closely with senior officers, elected members, developers, funders and external professional partners
  • Delivering innovative and commercially focused legal solutions to support the council’s growth and regeneration ambitions
  • Promoting high standards of performance, professional development and collaborative working across the team

Experience required:

  • Extensive experience in commercial property law
  • Experience leading or delivering major property, development or regeneration projects
  • Experience managing or supervising legal teams is desirable

Skills, knowledge and expertise required:

  • Strong commercial property and regeneration law expertise
  • Excellent negotiation and stakeholder management skills
  • Sound judgement with a pragmatic and solution‑focused approach
  • Ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Leadership and people management skills
