About The College
Northumberland College is Ofsted Outstanding and is currently building a multi-million, state of the art, new college campus in Ashington, due to open in 2026. The successful candidate will be based at the new college where a purpose-built construction, housing, advanced manufacturing and engineering centre will be located.
Curriculum spans technical, vocational further and higher education and includes large apprenticeship provision and dedicated centres for young people with SEND.
The College has two main campuses in Ashington, and Ponteland, and as part of the college group Education Partnership Northeast, it also has a significant number of satellite delivery centres across the region. About The Candidate

About The Role
This is a unique and exciting opportunity to lead the development of a brand-new SEMH curriculum at our new Wansbeck campus, supporting young people who are currently out of education due to social, emotional or mental health needs. You will play a key role in shaping the direction, culture and success of the provision from the ground up. As part of this role, you will collaborate with local authority partners, specialist services and internal teams. This post offers clear professional growth, the chance to lead strategic development work, and the opportunity to make a lasting difference.
Role Responsibilities
- Lead the design and implementation of the SEMH curriculum.
- Coordinate recruitment and transition of learners onto the new provision.
- Work closely with external agencies and the Local Authority.
- Ensure high-quality teaching, learning and support practices across the programme.
- Line manage and support staff within the provision.
- Monitor learner progress, wellbeing and outcomes to ensure positive pathways.
Qualifications
- Degree or equivalent level qualification.
- Relevant professional qualification in education, youth work, mental health or a related field.
Essential Skills & Experience
Please note: It is essential that applicants have an SEMH background and a deep understanding of alternative provision.
- Experience working with young people with SEMH needs.
- Strong understanding of trauma-informed and inclusive practice.
- Leadership experience or demonstrable potential to lead a team.
- Ability to build positive relationships with learners, families and professionals.
- Strong organisational and communication skills.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience designing or leading specialist curriculum pathways.
- Experience working within Further Education or alternative provision settings.
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification.
