Job Purpose
The Multi-Skilled Operative will support the delivery of works across the HS2 project by carrying out a wide range of construction, maintenance and site support activities. The role requires a flexible, safety-conscious individual capable of working across multiple trades and adapting to changing site requirements while maintaining high standards of quality, safety and environmental compliance.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of construction and civil engineering tasks, including groundworks, concreting, drainage, fencing, minor carpentry and general site maintenance.
- Operate hand and power tools safely and effectively.
- Assist plant operators, engineers and specialist contractors as required.
- Carry out excavation support, duct installation, kerbing, paving and reinstatement works.
- Install and maintain temporary works, barriers, signage and site protection measures.
- Conduct routine inspections of equipment and work areas, reporting defects or hazards promptly.
- Support environmental protection measures and sustainability initiatives on site.
- Maintain a clean, safe and organised working environment.
- Follow all project procedures, risk assessments and method statements.
- Attend toolbox talks, safety briefings and training sessions.
- Assist with emergency response procedures and incident reporting when required.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues, subcontractors and site management teams.
Health, Safety and Environmental Responsibilities
- Comply with all HS2, client and company health and safety requirements.
- Wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Report unsafe conditions, near misses and incidents immediately.
- Adhere to environmental regulations and site-specific controls.
- Promote a positive safety culture and actively contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.
Essential Requirements
- Previous experience within construction, civil engineering, infrastructure or rail projects.
- Valid CSCS Card.
- Good understanding of health and safety regulations.
- Ability to use a range of construction tools and equipment.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Reliable, flexible and able to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Full UK driving licence (preferred).
Desirable Qualifications
- CPCS or NPORS certification.
- EUSR, CAT and Genny or Confined Space certification.
- First Aid at Work qualification.
- Street Works (NRSWA) accreditation.
- Experience working on major infrastructure projects.
- Manual Handling and Working at Height training.
