Job Purpose

The Multi-Skilled Operative will support the delivery of works across the HS2 project by carrying out a wide range of construction, maintenance and site support activities. The role requires a flexible, safety-conscious individual capable of working across multiple trades and adapting to changing site requirements while maintaining high standards of quality, safety and environmental compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of construction and civil engineering tasks, including groundworks, concreting, drainage, fencing, minor carpentry and general site maintenance.
  • Operate hand and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Assist plant operators, engineers and specialist contractors as required.
  • Carry out excavation support, duct installation, kerbing, paving and reinstatement works.
  • Install and maintain temporary works, barriers, signage and site protection measures.
  • Conduct routine inspections of equipment and work areas, reporting defects or hazards promptly.
  • Support environmental protection measures and sustainability initiatives on site.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organised working environment.
  • Follow all project procedures, risk assessments and method statements.
  • Attend toolbox talks, safety briefings and training sessions.
  • Assist with emergency response procedures and incident reporting when required.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, subcontractors and site management teams.

Health, Safety and Environmental Responsibilities

  • Comply with all HS2, client and company health and safety requirements.
  • Wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Report unsafe conditions, near misses and incidents immediately.
  • Adhere to environmental regulations and site-specific controls.
  • Promote a positive safety culture and actively contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Requirements

  • Previous experience within construction, civil engineering, infrastructure or rail projects.
  • Valid CSCS Card.
  • Good understanding of health and safety regulations.
  • Ability to use a range of construction tools and equipment.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Reliable, flexible and able to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Full UK driving licence (preferred).

Desirable Qualifications

  • CPCS or NPORS certification.
  • EUSR, CAT and Genny or Confined Space certification.
  • First Aid at Work qualification.
  • Street Works (NRSWA) accreditation.
  • Experience working on major infrastructure projects.
  • Manual Handling and Working at Height training.
