Band 4 – Mechanical Craftsperson, Estates
We are looking for a motivated and skilled individual to join our Estates team, where you will contribute to a vital service supporting patient care.

Working pattern: 37.5 hours per week: Monday‑Thursday 8:00‑16:30 (1‑hour lunch) and Friday 8:00‑16:00 (30‑minute lunch). Must participate in the Mechanical on‑call rota (1 week in 9) and be able to make on‑site decisions using own initiative.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair faults on complex mechanical services and engineering plant, including heating plant, pumps, boilers, air‑handling units, BMS plant controls, water tanks and quality systems.
- Monitor temperatures with handheld devices, calibrate thermostatic mixing valves, tanks and calorifiers to meet Control of Legionella Policy.
- Fabricate and repair iron pipework by screwing or welding; install steam raising plant, distribution and condensate return systems.
- Carry out installation, repair and planned preventative maintenance on heating systems, compressors, motors, pumps, heat recovery, ventilation systems and controls.
- Conduct statutory inspections, testing and complete necessary documentation.
- Undertake electrical isolations of pumps, motors etc. as instructed and on assessment of electrical competency.
- Perform non‑complex fault finding across trades and assist lifts, including emergency evacuation of persons when required by Health & Safety regulations.
- Install heavy engineering plant using lifting equipment, complying with Trust policies.
- Provide emergency recall and undertake on‑call duties to ensure evening and overnight repairs are completed.
- Work with other trades, external contractors and internal disciplines, interpreting detailed engineering drawings and specifications to instruct and advise others.
- Maintain an efficient working rate with minimum supervision, carrying communication devices (mobile phones, two‑way radios) for immediate response to emergencies.
Qualifications & Skills
- Recognised apprenticeship, City & Guilds or BTEC (ONC) in Mechanical Engineering/Plumbing; NVQ3 or above.
- CP MGPS, CP Ventilation, CP Pressure Systems, BG01 Boiler operator or Steam experience desirable.
- Knowledge of Legionella awareness, water hygiene and mechanical services.
- Experience in heating & ventilation plumbing; experience with steam, medical gases and pressure systems desirable.
- Must possess competent person assessments in relevant mechanical positions.
Conditions
- Permanent contract.
- Band 4 with salary £28,392 to £31,157 per year, including HCA. 15.5% R&R reviewed annually and 3% on‑call payment.
- Full‑time, flexible working.
- Location: Watford General Hospital, Watford, WD18 0HB.
- Emergency overtime and unsupervised work may be required.
