Staff Nurse in SDEC – Band 5 (Internal Only)

**This position is open to staff working at the Trust in the ‘ECT Family’ this includes currentEast Cheshire NHS Trust employees,both NHSP and ECT bank staff, ISS staff and volunteers at the Trust. Unfortunately, we cannot accept applications from applicants not listed within these groups.**

Under the direction of the Ward Manager and SDEC Coordinator the role of a Band 5 Staff Nurse is to support them to assess, plan, implement, evaluate and deliver high quality, evidence-based, holistic person-centred care and to assist in the supervision of more junior members of staff.

In the absence of band 6/7 nurse the postholder will be required to act as team leader who will be responsible and accountable for the smooth running of the rostered shift.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintain own NMC registration and personal portfolio in line with PREP guidelines and professional development.
  • To contribute to and ensure the timely and efficient admissions and transfers of patients to and from A & E /wards/ hospitals and to lead the ward team in the absence of the band 6/7 nurse
  • To participate and assist in the early assessment and implementation of safe discharge planning utilising appropriate resources and referral systems and to act as a role model to more junior members of staff
  • To be accountable for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating, and delivering high quality, evidence-based care, including maintaining high standards of documentation.
  • To contribute and promote an awareness of audit, research and participate in service developments in order to assist and support the ward manager to improve the quality of person-centred care whilst maintaining professional standards
  • To support and maintain patient safety by undertaking clinical risk assessments and utilising the clinical incident reporting system
  • To maintain and develop appropriate clinical skills to ensure best practice and demonstrate competencies commensurate with the band
  • To support and encourage patient empowerment and assist patient choice through the provision and teaching of health promotion, PPI and PALS involvement.
  • To take responsibility and ownership of personal and professional development with the support of ward manager and clinical manager

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse (Nursing and Midwifery Council NMC)
  • Understanding of NMC Code, safeguarding and consent; working knowledge of NHS values and standards
  • Post-registration course relevant to clinical area

Knowledge & Skills

  • Able to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care; effective documentation skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to build therapeutic relationships
  • Ability to work within a team and take delegated responsibility, understanding of professional boundaries
  • Able to prioritise and manage time effectively in a busy clinical setting
  • Confident in using electronic patient records and digital systems
  • Compassionate, reliable, committed to personcentred care; demonstrates resilience and emotional maturity
  • Proficient in clinical procedures relevant to the area (e.g., IV administration, catheterisation)
  • Experience liaising with families and multiagency professionals
  • Knowledge of local and national healthcare initiatives
  • Evidence of continuous professional development

Experience

  • Evidence of recent acute or relevant clinical experience (including student placements)
  • Previous experience mentoring students or supervising junior staff
  • Experience of taking charge or leading a shift
  • Experience contributing to service improvement or change
  • Experience using audit or reporting tools
