City St George’s is seeking an outstanding clinician-educator to take on the role of Simulation Teaching Co-Lead for the MBBS programme.
This is a key academic leadership role with responsibility for the academic leadership and development of low- and high-fidelity simulation throughout the MBBS programme. You will review existing simulation teaching for MBBS students and develop a comprehensive strategy to enhance simulation across all year groups, in line with GMC guidelines. The role is held jointly as Co-Lead with the current postholder, with responsibilities and remit shared equally between them.
Working in close partnership with the Co-Lead, the Head of the Clinical and Communication Skills Section, the MBBS Director of Curriculum Development, year leads, simulation tutors and partner trust simulation leads, you will oversee delivery of simulation teaching, develop a vertically integrated simulation strand across the curriculum, support quality assurance, and foster a network of best practice across host placement sites.
This role includes oversight of key established sessions (such as the final-year DOPs simulation, MBBS5 Year 1 EYCE ward-based simulation, and T Year Verification of Death) and the development of new sessions in response to identified learning needs.
You will:
- Provide academic leadership for the use of low- and high-fidelity simulation throughout the MBBS programme, working jointly with the Simulation Co-Lead
- Design, coordinate and deliver simulation teaching, working with the clinical skills team and other teams contributing to the MBBS programme
- Oversee and deliver key established sessions including the final-year DOPs simulation, MBBS5 Year 1 EYCE ward-based simulation, and T Year Verification of Death, and support delivery of simulated ward rounds and other clinical skills sessions based on simulation
- Design new simulation sessions in response to identified learning needs, such as the T Year Confirmation of Death and P Year Handover sessions, and develop a vertically integrated simulation strand throughout the programme
- Oversee the recruitment, training, management, and professional development of simulation tutors, and support the training of Clinical Teaching Fellows to deliver simulation for key outcomes
- Ensure that assessment of simulation activity follows best practice, and engage with quality assurance processes including the Teaching Excellence Framework as it relates to simulation
- Liaise with simulation leads at partner trusts (including St George’s, Epsom, Frimley, Kingston and St Helier), visiting peripheral sites as required, and foster a network of best practice across host placement sites
- Conduct comprehensive reviews of the current state of simulation teaching at City St George’s and partner sites, identify gaps, challenges and opportunities, and review existing resources including equipment, space and staff
- Develop and deliver a strategy to increase the visibility and reach of simulation teaching for MBBS students, aligned with the institutional educational objectives, and work with the Curriculum Lead to ensure appropriate representation of simulation in the curriculum
- Establish a system for ongoing evaluation and quality assurance of simulation activities, including student and staff feedback, provide written reports as needed, report to the MBBS Committee as required, and foster a culture of support, continuous improvement and innovation in simulation teaching
To be successful in your application:
- You will be a registered medical practitioner (MBBS or equivalent)
- Experience of teaching medicine at an Undergraduate and or foundation
- Knowledge of the MBBS curriculum
- Understanding of the use of simulation in medical education
